NY chicken lover!!!!

Hubby came up short 2 in tonight's head count, Luna and her one fall chick were missing. I went up to call and search. No sign of the chick, but found Luna :'(. I don't know what happened, she is laying along the pine trees in front of the barn. Her feathers all still look full and perfect, no signs of bites or pecks. She was my favorite hen and only one to go broody, beautiful purebred blue Orp that I got from Annie. RIP sweet girl. :'(.

So Sorry

if her baby is missing ..maybe she died trying to protect it .
Do they range far from the house ..where you couldnt hear them if something happened ? Is hubby home during the day ?

I am going to miss watching the chickens outside of my office window...in the backyard of the house
..when I move my office to the other side of the house .( the front )
During the day I often leave my window open a crack ...for chickens sounds ...or open it & say hello when I hear them outside ..

Sounds like you need to make a coop out front. Maybe a raised small one where they can see into the house while in it.

Quote: Or I can see in their house ..LOL
They do have a hiding place under our front door I made for them- 4 logs with a board over them for shelter - No step / Deck there
I was thinking how could I draw them to the front yard where I can see them ?
If it was summer ..I could call them ...they will come to me if they can figure out where I am ..LOL..
and throw seeds out the window for them
Have you seen my come chickies video ?

Lapeerian - so sorry about your fav hen ... I know how that goes...odd that she had no signs of struggle - perhaps a dog ran her into a heart attack.

I thank all for sharing stories like this - they may be hard to share, but I listen and learn and try to keep guard by learning from you all.

I think I may have seen it. I know mine go crazy sometimes when I call them. I love watching them come in the snow because they fly so much trying to not touch the snow.

Well I'm a bad chicken counter and so is my wife. We thought we was suppose to have 25 birds in big coop but really its 26. So my youngest girl that has the foot problem has been sleeping out in the cold these past two nights. No wonder it looks like she could have started to get frost bite. At least she's inside now and gets pampered.

Good Morning all, I checked my trapline after work yesterday and caught a small mouse. same trap i caught the rat in. I think my DIY rat trap thing is working. the chickens were loving the weather yesterday, lets hope today is nice. and there are no more mice!

I just caught up on over 200 posts. Whew!

Jen -- I'm sorry about Luna.

Rancher and Ginny-- The buckeyes are pretty and nice natured birds. I liked them. The problem I had was the roo was being mean to the hens. The hens were also getting pushed around be the others because they were so sweet natured. When DH insisted I had to downsize I opted to not continue with that breed because I favored my OE and BLRW more.

I haven't been on here in days. Christmas time is busy and I seemed more behind this year than ever before. Christmas eve I was up for 21 hours straight from work through to my side family get together. I got home at 11pm slept 4 hrs woke up with the baby got her back to sleep then wrapped all the presents before the older 2 woke up. Travis had the stomach bug on xmas that us girls had earlier in the week so I did all the driving to see his family in McGraw, NY. In the mix I've been working an extra midnight shift on Friday's when I can to help pay off vet, beef, and Christmas bills. Now I'm working on cleaning up after hurricane Christmas and bracing for hurricane new years when my in laws are coming up. I'm so craving some quiet time and a date night with Travis.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas! And have a Happy New Years!

Welcome to the newbie! I will have hatching eggs available. Maybe I'll get my pens sorted to the way I want them for breeding around all the chaos.

She was a big bird, so a dog would have easily caught her. I checked what snow was left in the yard, but didn't see any unusual tracks. The Amish kids have been playing in the pine trees where the chickens hang out during the day when there isn't snow trapping them inside the horse barn. I did check underneath to see if the chick was under her, but wasn't. Going to check her over today in the light, if her body hadn't been carried off by the Amish dogs last night. Only thing odd I seen was an earthworm laying in front of her.
