NY chicken lover!!!!

TT is being very faithful ..to her nest ...Ive been giving her little nibbles to eat .
We are going to give her a couple eggs . When I go out to get eggs they are always cold .
Is it okay to let her have some of these cold ones ? or should I wait for some warm ones ?
I would think it wouldn't matter as long as they were not frozen? All you can do is try & see what happens

Will be fine i've hatched from fridge and others have also. Make sure not frozen or cracked and be fine.

I have a related question...When you mixed breeds of chickens what do they look like? Do they take the traits of one of their parents over the other? Example my roo is a speckled sussex. If I hatch out chicks from him and one of my hens what would the chicks end up like? I have some red sexlinks and 3 marans. Are there specific breeds that will only give the sexlinked chicks? I know that my girls are supposed to be RIR and NHR? What other combinations give you the sexlink trait? ...Just wondering

I believe that one parent needs to have a "barred" gene, such as barred rock or dels, to get a sexlink chick. Scratch Cradle (a blog) had some good articles on genetics, like sex link and egg colors. Or I'm sure an experienced chicken breeder will chime in here.

Yup. Had an egg customer take eggs of unknown age (pretty fresh, but could have been marginal on 10 days) that had been in my fridge for the entire time and not tilted, hatch 3 of the 4 he put under his broody hen. (now he doesn't buy eggs from me any more, tho. Has 5 hens of his own)

My BRs havent laid since the first polar vortex. Lazy Hens. The Leghorns and the Sex Links lay almost every day!

when we had them delivered to the barn they would replace wet bags with the next shipment, however we were ordering 150 bags of shavings at a time.

I did receive a response that they would replace the damp bags but I only buy 5 or 10 at a time. Of course it could have been the storage too. Which I figured if the bags are left in the sun or a damp place.

I mix them with DE to dry them out, but they did say they were working on drying them properly. I assume he means condition or condensation.

I'm satisfied with their reply.

Rancher Hicks,

Thank you for your preference of our shavings!
Indeed their being dust free is one of the aspects which distinguishes them from others.

Sorry to hear that you have gotten a bad batch of bedding for your animals!
They are not supposed to be wet as you are describing.

Every year once the true cold sets in, our systems get bogged down and we need to reformulate the drying patterns. Because we can never anticipate the effect there is always a chance a wet batch makes it out to our Customers. In addition, occasionally our resellers may store product outside and moisture leaks in.

Regardless, I apologize for the inconvenience and we would be happy to supply you with replacement bedding if you stopped by the Plant in Sherrill. If thats not an option, we can arrange to have it done through CountryMax.

We are currently in the process of acquiring updated equipment which will alleviate this seasonal contention. It is part of our Plant upgrade due this Spring.

Thanks again for bringing it to our attention.

Female needs to be barred or cuckoo male can be any color but white messes with it.

If you google "sexlink information" there is a long write up on red sexlinks black sexlinks feather sexing.

Edit found it. Had it booked marked.

Where is this plant in Sherrill? I have gotten my shavings from a friends lumber mill....I was thinking they were dry...maybe not?

There needs to be certain genetics. For a black sex link, the mother must be barred. The father can be any color except white or barred. For a red sex link, things are a little more complicated, but there's a good chart in that thread JLaw posted. However some crosses are not on there. For example my light brahma Cider who was killed by the dog's chicks were sex linked because the combo of her and either of my roosters yielded sex links. I hatched two eggs from her after her death, and both are female. Both have feathered legs and some black markings, but have more of their fathers' colors. There was one chick from each roo. So, they tend to take traits from both parents and it's really just a mystery what you'll get with mutts!
