NY chicken lover!!!!

Most topical insecticide you have to wait 1 - 2 weeks

Mine Just dust bathe in dirt ...almost every day ...under our deck ...even this time of year .
no toxins to work out ...I can always eat the eggs ...I have never had any mites or bugs of any kind .
they are healthier ...and I sleep great knowing I am not putting chemicals on them

There is no withdrawal of meat with Epernex (sp)....I assume if you can butcher right after treatment you can eat the eggs. However, if it makes you feel better throw out a couple days worth of eggs. 10 days worth if you use the stuff in the water, actually. I figure people get worms too, so if I eat an egg or two with a touch of de-wormer in it, so what? (PS, they use that pour on on PEOPLE in third world countries....not that I advise doing THAT, but it is done in some parts of the world)

I agree Gramma. Sounds like your birds have great immune systems.
Someone I know near me I helped with his fowl and livestock twice when he decided to bail on them... each time they were all covered in lice it was pathetic.
Good husbandry and not overcrowding do wonders. I don't remember ever having a lice problem when I had chickens before. Hopefully I won't. I use the Diatomaceous food grade earth and organic apple cider vinegar for my cats and dogs inside them and outside...works great. Will do the same for the birds. If I was taking birds from other people I would de-louse them first with something just to not bring it home.

this weather is killing me!!!!!

I hear that!! I've had enough of this nonsense. you can take the girl off the west coast but.. you'd think after ten years I'd be used to this stuff.

I'm seeing people are using a couple drops of Frontline too now. I may try that if the need really arises. There is not much data on the time or if you need to not eat the eggs or meat for a few weeks or what.. I imagine it would be smart to wait.

If you read the label for the Exprinex which has the same ingredient as Front line, there is no (zero slaughter withdrawl) withdraw. This is why I use it. I want the lowest impact I can get. It's not something I use a lot, perhaps twice a year.

Keeping your coops as dry as possible it the best prevention. Dust and quarantine all new birds for 30 days at least. If you know you will be bringing in new birds from time to time it's best to have a set up ready and away from the main flock.

I forgot to mention that some wormers DO NOT work for all worm types. However worms in chickens is not a common as we think, IMHO. I've never really noticed mites or worm in my birds but I'm not waiting until I do, so I treat as a precaution. Usually with the least invasive stuff.

There are of course natural remedies and I do use these too. Garlic, pumpkin and others here know of more.

This is my thought too. Since I only treat once I don't worry.

Is anyone else here familiar with James Herriots books. In his day when cows got sick it was believed that had "worm in t' tail". The farmers would actually chop off the cows tail. How far we've come.

Morning All,
Well Miss Layla Lavender Silkie is quite the early egg layer. Found another egg this morning when I went out there at 7. Wasn't as cold as yesterday's egg but I'll have to remember to get out there early every day to collect them if I want to try another hatch after this one. Should be warmer out by then but with the way this winter is going who knows.

Has anyone ever tracked their hen's egg laying for the year to see just how many eggs they got from them? I have these two free calendars DH brought home a couple of weeks ago and I decided to use one for tracking which days I got eggs. Probably sounds crazy of me but after how poorly my girls laid last year I want to keep track.

I need to lay down and take a nap. Haven't been sleeping much since DH left Sunday. I think I finally got 5 hours last night. I can't believe it's snowing again. Just wake me when it's Spring!
