NY chicken lover!!!!

Any advice on how to choose who to keep and who to part with will be appreciated.
Keep those you want to work with and breed and get rid of the rest. If there is an egg coop only and you only want eggs keep the hens you want there even if not for breeding. Sorry not much help but all depends on the person and what they have planned to do.

You can try to change your town ordinance. A lot of back yard chicken people are trying to change they're towns/cities zoning laws on chickens. If you try to do it start with trying to get roosters in and then give them up as a clause in the ordinance. It will make you look like you are willing to work. Point out that fresh eggs are healthier than store eggs, chickens eat bugs and small pests if they can catch them. I think there is a spot on here about helping people change zoning laws.

I didnt think about getting a rooster. Thats a good idea. I was thinking of writing a letter to explain everything to them as well. I talked to my neighbor thats closet to where the coop is going. He doesnt mind chcikens because he grew up with them. I may just let go and see what happens. I was on the towns website last night and many people have been caught and have been granted the appeal.

If a lot of people have been caught, sounds like you might be able to get a pretty good petition going. Also, as JLaw said, write up a document arguing for chickens and what you want and take it, your petition, and anyone else you can get to support you to your next city council meeting. Also like JLaw said, include some things like roosters that you are willing to give up in negotiations because that makes you look reasonable. And check out this thread for links to helpful info on getting the laws changed. Check out the Local Chicken Laws and Ordinances section too because you can find good information there, including good things to put in your write-up fro chickens like the fact that five hens are less noisy that a barking dog and produce less waste than one per week, too.

Also, I hope Metella chimes in here. She'd know how to help because she is one of the people that people in her town go before to appeal things like this.

Hey guys, have any of you bought eggs from the hatchery in Fayette? The one on Ridge Rd.? If so, how was your experience with them?
I agree. I only bought 6, the birds were healthy enough but the hidden prices they charge were ridiculous. I called ahead to ask about Buff Orpingtons and yes they had them. Drove directly there and they only had 1. Won't do that again. (I must have missed the previous conversation on this)

Had this discussion last week. Avoid Fayette aka A&J Hatchery. Any certain breeds you looking for? Someone here can hook you up.
I thought I had read something mentioning Fayette...but they came up on Craigslist so I figured I'd ask to make sure.

I'm looking for local Black Australorp and Buff Orpington. Speckled Sussex, too. I've had a few folks from here offer eggs, but it was a bit far.

well my little baby chick died today ..I dont think she knew how to feed herself or she had some birth defect .
I thought she was better she was eating yesterday.. she lived a week ..
I held her for a couple hours & petted her ...very little responce ..She just wanted to sleep .
I had to go outside to take care of chicken s . When I came in she had passed .The other 5 seem fine ...

Sorry to hear that I did read somewhere that if there is a birth defect they usaly don't make it past 5 months

Where are you located? I know someone in Pompey (not on BYC) that has good quality Buff Orps and SS hatching eggs. Crzy4Chicks has Australorps.

Yes, the Fayette place is kind of strange, it uses several names, and I too called to verify that they had Buff Orpingtons, then drove there and came back with the chicks. As they grew, it turned out they were some sort of sex link, not BO. I called and they never admitted a mistake or apologized, they just fed me a line of ....whatever. I would never deal with them again. Then they kept me on their mailing list, which fanned my anger with each contact. I replied to their contacts several times, telling them how I felt and why. Finally they have stopped contacting me, as I asked.

With others getting appeals you stand a good chance of change i would think. Good luck with it. If you need help i'm sure people on here will help. Just try to not get pushed too far. O've seen some laws where coops have to be cleaned daily i think it was.
