I also use the totes with the hardware cloth over an opening but I attached mine with metal wire. The totes and lids do cut down on dust. I have 2 huge long ones I use for the ducklings it helps to keep the whole tote from getting soaked they usually keep most of the wet soggy to one end for at least a couple of days.

Maybe it is close to me and I can pick them up and bring them to the picnic ... but VT is a long state - so I can't go just anywhere.

Lost power for about 3 hours this morning. Babies were fine. Bator lost some heat but its early yet so Im not worried. Turning into a decent day today. Work is trying to get me to come in early. I am ignoring them. Only way they will learn to schedule appropriately. Cleaned out the brooder and left the door open for some air. My blue silkies are laying so if anyone is interested in some eggs, pm me. Fertility is proven in this pen.

Welcome to all the newbies! We are more than happy to help (enable) you with your chickens (your addiction). You will find plenty of help (enablers) with any questions(about getting more chickens) you may have. Oh, you should know that morehens disease is running rampant this year and there is no cure. It can be aleviated with the acquisition of more chicks, hatching eggs or fowl of any kind.

and you are just setting the lamp loose on the top ? Right ? the duct tape is only to line the opening for heat to go straight down ?

I don't care about dust for my set up - they are in the garage; I just want a top that no critters can sneak into and the peeps can't hop/fly out the top ... but they are still a little too small and it is a little too cold for no light.


Also - I have that HUGE batch of eggs in Pyxis' bater .... ha ha ha ha

I was thinking of making some holes in the top or the sides so it wont get humid and I can put the lid on tight. Have to experiment. I don't have nosey kids messin around with it, grandkids know better, nor any animals, so just putting the top on like that works for me. I had every batch of chicks from november until a week ago, hatching every week, inside my house, without any dust or dander getting out. I kept each weeks hatch, in for a week, until the next hatch. Sol I guess that is continusly from fall until now.

Just a few ideas here since I sorta do the same as you at least for the first three days before they go into a bigger brooder. I use a cat cage but use a full lid of hardware cloth. I used 2x2's to make a frame that fits over the top of the cat carrier since I cut the top off. In winter or colder house times I use a towel over part of it to keep heat in and then take it off if too hot.

If you want to try and use the full tote lid sealed make sure you have some holes in sides also so the air can circulate better. Also instead of duct tape try getting some fender washers and some small bolts/nuts put a few holes through lid then secure it with the bolts and nuts. Less chance of it slipping off or through and if you put a few through close to edge of the light will help keep it from slideing off the top.

JLaw .... You so funny ! Vermont has less than 7K people .... we only have one list for the whole state.

I think it was actually in the free section ... but I don't see them now - maybe they were snatched up.

Do a google search on how to search all of craigs list at once and see if there are any close by - I do that sometimes for the more rare things I am looking for.

Well it's broody mayhem at my house now! And of course it's always the birds I want to be laying. My black australorp has been broody for a while now and is doing a good job. I didn't really need her eggs so I didn't care. She was supposed to have three eggs and ended up stealing seven more but whatever. But, of course, my MF cochin hen, the only one I have, had to go broody. So no eggs from her for chickenstock I guess. I don't even know how many eggs she has but it's probably a lot and I need to investigate the total number later. And one of my welsh harlequins went broody, which wouldn't be a problem if the other three were laying, but they're not And for no reason, unless something scared them and stressed them out, in which case I hope they start laying again soon. It would happen right when I have duckling orders to fill and someone just won an auction for their eggs on eBay.

Would you all mind posting pics of your brood box setups? I'm curious to see how everyone is doing it. I like Marquisella's idea, but would like to see some others.

Here's ours. The big downside to ours, of course, is cleaning it (can't hose down plywood), and the sheer size of it. The top door is propped open like that, to raise up the heat lamp, to lower the temp inside the box. When they're newly hatched, the door is all the way down.
