NY chicken lover!!!!

Lynzi - I'm so sorry to hear that. They were so cute. You know you still have dibs on my first hatch of magpies next year!!

Rancher - Glad that things are looking good for DW. Have been thinking a lot today about you both, wondering and praying that there would be good news for her.

I am totally in love with my 2 silkie girls! I don't know why I waited so long to get them. (I must get more!) They are just so cute. The bigger white hen is mothering the little blue one and it is so cute. I really need to figure out some names. When they are laying down most of the time the older white hen has the little blue tucked under her. This morning when I went out to check on them The big white girl was sitting in the middle and I didn't see the little blue until she poked her head out from under the white hen. I have never had a broody hen so this to me is soooo cute.

A friend of mine said I should name the white one Gwyneth Fowltro. cute, but not sure...

Anyone know where Clydes gets their chicks from? This is where I bought mine this year....and I have them mingling with the meat chicks so I sure hope they dont have anything. How would I know? Are there any signs?

If you mean the one in Hamburg check on hither website they might still have the info online. Or call them. They are very friendly.

As.for what to do with chicks from there.....use common sanitary practices when handling them. But I don't think I would sell the eggs they laid unless I had them tested

Love it! LOL! I've been compiling chicken names for the last couple of weeks...cutesy play on words, type names.

For example, we have a hen named Sally Strutters.

So far my list includes:

Cluck Norris (a favorite, lol)
Attila the Hen
Princess Layer (Leia)
Darth Layder
Albert Eggstein
Hens Solo
Yolk O Ono
Captain James T. Cluck
Cluck Kent
Lois Layin'
Margaret Hatcher

I'll have to add Gwyneth Fowltro to the list

I once had a EE egg that had a crack. I took at white candle and rubbed it over the crack a few times. Stuck it back under the hen and she hatched two for tow.

Just want to put this out there.

If someone is up to ordering chicks, and they're too much, it may help to have others go in on an order with you. If of course they are willing. This is how I got ducks.

Personally I wouldn't do so for chicks from a hatchery only a private breeder of quality stock. Ducks are hard to come by in small quantities of certain breeds. Geese even more so.

Lynzii- be aware you have first dibs on hatching eggs from these ducks so if you plan to get more and want some of these Swedish be prepared. Unless things change around here.

DW saw the Doc. Things looked good. There will be treatments and we'll take it one day at a time.
Rancher so glad your wife got some better news will continue to keep her in my thoughts.

I really wish I had gotten started with polish chickens a long time ago. Between the one I had gotten that passed aways the two newest frizzled ones I now have and the polish/Silkie mixes, they are most fun to watch and the most entertaining. They're still so small yet they roam the yard like they own the place. They're great flyers. And they've all been the friendliest of all my chickens. I swear the polish Silkie crossed wanted to take a ride on my shoes today while I walked around the yard. And at night? They just go into whatever coop suits them. Last night it was the Silkie coop, tonight they're roosting with the Orps! Lol I'm glad I held onto those three! No one messes with them because they're too fast for anyone to peck at.
The Polish are hilarious to watch walk around. I love my Polish.

I dont think that is a reasonable time . I always wash them that day ...let them dry overnight on top of the frig ..put them in egg carton in the Frig .
We never have eggs for more than a few days ...we eat them or they sell .
See, I've heard different things about this.

I've heard that they can keep for months, out of the fridge, if you do not wash them. Washing them removes the protective "bloom" that is applied to the egg as it passes out of the hen.

Normally, I have up to 3 doz in the fridge, and those are the ones that get used first. As they get used, I replace them with the ones sitting on the counter.

We only have four hens (three laying...the 4th is neurotic and good for nothing) so its not like we have a ton of eggs....2-3/day. Just enough for our family's use, really. We'll have more laying hens after this winter, so we'll probably end up having more eggs than we can handle at some point next year.

When you wash the egg you take off the protective bloom the hen puts on it. Once washed it should be refridgerated immediately....top of fridge is warm and will encourage bacteria growth....that will now be able to get in through the pours in the egg cuz the bloom is gone.

The USA is the only country in the world that routinely refridgerates eggs. We are the only country that has a government telling egg producers to WASH the eggs. The rest of the world just takes them from the hen house to the counter and sells them from there. (My aunt never washed an egg in her life...just scraped off any poo when it came to the house and plunked it in the egg basket on the counter in the kitchen. Receipes tell you to use "room temp" eggs)

Of course, you can do what works for you....just my two cents and my aunts decades of egg handling experience.

Morning all! Another beautiful day and back to work for me. I got in some quality chicken therapy time last night. Sat and watched the brats and monsters to see what was really going on. Seems its mostly the boys making waves. The little monsters insist on being out and want to be with the brats but the brat boys are giving them a hard time. No blood being drawn but pecking them pretty good from time to time. Even after I grabbed the little monsters and threw them back in the coop they ran to the pop door and then ran out again. I let them be. As long as no one is getting hurt, might as well let them sort it out. The brats are finally roosting. Girls are singing the egg song this morning so I am hoping that means more eggs. Gave them a protein boost yesterday.

Marq--I think you are right about the silkies. People have been busy mixing colors to create all these new colors and thats why some are getting odd colors from their solid color silkies. I have been careful about whom I get mine from in that its a closed color flock. Now that I am working on light blues, I am still working with only two colors (blue and splash) to get what I am looking for. Its a work in progress.

Rancher--thats good news on DW. I am very happy that she is doing better.

Sweetpea--How old are these chicks you want to put in with your flock? If they are too little and you havent had them in a separate area where the flock can look but not touch, they will get picked on and maybe killed. If they are the offspring of your rooster, he may kill them. If you are planning on doing in your rooster, do it before you introduce the chicks to the flock. Unless your chicks are old enough to fend for themselves the hens could do them in. My hens do go over to the brats coop and will peck them through the wire if they think they can get to them. Its just the way it is in chickenworld.

Off to the pharm today. It was a nice four days off. Have a good day everyone.
