NY chicken lover!!!!

Way too many broodies over here. My duck is still broody, but she is officially not allowed to hatch any more babies because when her three ducklings hatched she kicked them out of the nest to let them die. She's still sitting on eggs so I'm going to have to break her soon. I had my black australorp go broody but she was inexperienced and ran away from her chicks and kept leaving them behind and all three have disappeared. I expect she'll be laying again soon. The cochin hen that Featherz gave me is brooding for her second time I think - her first time was with Featherz - and she's doing well. She has four chicks and is taking good care of them. Penny, my buff orp, has gone broody and I'm going to give her the eggs that the duck has to finish up. She's a good mom. Also have a first time broody, the daughter of my favorite hen who killed in the dog attacks I suffered last year. She has thirteen eggs. She's a big girl and she handle that many eggs. I'll probably separate her and the babies out if she manages to hatch that many. And my mille fleur cochin bantam hen is broody too. She has her own eggs and two LF eggs that ended up in her nest somehow. And of course all those eggs I won at the picnic are due this coming weekend. I am going to be swimming in chicks. Not to mention that those turkey eggs that I won that I do not need are all coming along.

Would anyone be interested in a few Orpington chicks if any hatch of this 7 that are going strong in my incubator right now? They should be blues and splash. I'm looking for a few more splash to ensure I get a hen. The rest will be up for grabs. (I know I shouldn't count my chicks before they hatch but just wanna throw it out there that's what I'm currently hatching)

Lyndsi777. Keep forgetting to show you a picture of the girls. Here is one, the other two look just like her but have tails. All three ended up as ladies! Thanks again!

Evening all. Knee is crabby but still going. Came home to see the brats/monsters were out playing while chicken daddy was mowing the lawn. I swear they are growing in leaps and bounds. Its nice to see them out enjoying themselves. The terrorists, of course, have their beaks out of joint because they are locked up in their run. It got warm today so I am glad I went in late so I could fill waterers before leaving home. My tiny balls of fluff are quick little silkie chicks when I want to take them out to cuddle. Have to candle the eggs under the broodies to see whats going on. Sassy always wants to destroy you when you reach under her to check her eggs. She is one fierce half pound killer blue silkie hen, thats for sure!

Still hot here. Hope it cools down some tonight.

Pyxis--I sure do hope you have lots of room for all those hatching eggs you are hatching! You might have to have a chicken bar-b-que to lighten the load!

Morning all! Enjoyed a beautiful day yesterday. Mealworms are great for bribing hens back into the coop. I got everyone dosed and dusted. I think only a couple had mites started but everybody and everything was dusted anyways. Killed my can of dust but I feel better knowing they were all treated. Of course they all screamed like I was killing them when I grabbed them to do the deed. Silly girls. I got dusted too with all the carrying on they did. No cooties on me!!! I am thinking its time to move the brats in with the girls. They are big now and the coop is too crowded with both the brats and monsters in there. The girls wont be happy but maybe they can ride herd on the boys. Earliest I can process them is late july (although there are a couple who are getting on my nerves and it might be sooner for them.) My plants have perked up a bit now that they are in the raised bed but I think I may pick up a few more and some flowers to put in there as well. My track record isnt good with plants (aka I usually kill them) but I am making a concerted effort this year to grow stuff and make the place look nice. Dh wants to move Legolas coop soon which is good as it will give me the rest of the summer to put up a run for it and landscape around it with all the rocks from the rock wall I have to move to do so. My ambition often exceeds my abilities and capabilities but there it is. Back to work today at the pharm. At least I can sit if i need to.

Rancher--Havent gotten one of those parts yet. Trying to avoid it at all costs. Unless it can make me the Bionic Woman, in which case Im all in for everything being replaced!

Elroddo--If you really want to treat young chicks, stay with yogurt and scrambled eggs. At a week old, their digestive tracts are still developing good gut bacteria and the yogurt will provide that. Scrambled eggs are a good source of protein for them as well.

Jlaw--you try any of that dust I was talking about? I love that stuff.

Tab--Keep those nasty flies up there! They eat me alive and so do mosquitoes. My family makes me go outside first to draw them all to me so they can go out and not be bothered. I have to bath in deet sometimes just to be left alone. I love deet. I would rather die from deet than get eaten alive by mosquitoes and black flies!

Okay--time to go. Ta for now.
Pharm- what is the dust you use. I have been using food grade DE. Do you recommend something else? I look forward to reading your posts. How is the knee?

Looks like our Magpie babies are starting to get their big duck voices. Sounds like 2 are girls and one is a boy. Still waiting to hear if the 4th is a boy or a girl. Hopefully in the next few days he/she will decided. The one on the top is still undecided (Girty). The one on the right (Maggie) is the drake (I think) and the crested one in the middle (Lynzi) and the one on the bottom (Dottie) are girls (I think)

Broodies are still sitting. Hopefully we'll have some chicks early next week. Took this pic just before Peepers (top) decided that she wanted to go back to her nest box.
