Wow, thank you both so much!
I have a new update to the situation.
Twice now, I have seen the chickens run over to my yard from one particular neighbor's yard. I hadn't seen any chicken coops in their yard but I figured I should ask. As I was walking over to their house, the lady came outside and said "Are you looking for your chickens?" I was like, "They aren't MY chickens! I was coming to ask if they were yours!" So, they weren't hers but she gave me a lead on which neighbor's they might be. It was about 5 house away and on another street.
I drove over to THAT house (which is way off the street) and, lo and behold, there are tons of speckled sussex running around (no fencing or anything). The guy was outside and I told him his chickens were at my house. He didn't seem that concerned or interested, I think the chickens are his wife's doing. Anyway, he said he figured they were either dead or would come back eventually; but I got the feeling that he didn't really notice they were gone. I told him that I won't feed them tomorrow and he said he would try to come catch them in the afternoon or evening. But he didn't sound too invested.
So, if he doesn't come by the end of the week, I'm still going to have my friend with the farm take them. Because I have four chickens in my yard and they have been here for two weeks now! My yard is completely torn up and and I'm stressing over their welfare. I feel like if they had a proper home with food and stuff, they wouldn't be living here. Or do they get lost once they are away from home? But why would they leave "home" if they had enough food and felt safe? Anyway, they'll have a home one way or another. I'm just afraid now that they know I'm a sucker and will feed them, that they will come back even if he takes them home!
