NY chicken lover!!!!

Wondering if any of you know of local sources for hatching eggs. I am in Saratoga. I haven't found anything but I also am new to this so I might be looking in the wrong places. I have been considering trying some from Papas Poultry or the Ameracaunas on the BST thread, but would rather go local if I could, at least while I get the hang of incubating.

What breeds are you looking for, or just hatching eggs in general? A couple of us are around your area (me included) so we might have what you're looking for.

I'm not far from there at all and could meet you there is need be.  What would be your limit to bring it? 

As far as Chickenstock is concerned I'm fine with it, but perhaps Tab and Travis want to do it again?  Wouldn't want to step on their toes or make them think we don't appreciate them. Though they may not be interested at all.   


That is a good price.  You could take orders before hand.  How long does it stay fresh and what is the protein level?  

JJ's has feed and their price is good but not worth my drive. Though with gas prices it might be now. I do need to make a drive up to them for DE.  

Cold this AM. Waterers frozen solid. Though to be fair I didn't break them all out yesterday just added hot water.  My DD's had that hoarders show on last evening. Gave me nightmares. Made me consider getting up and cleaning coops and getting rid of all the chickens.  This has been the messiest fall and winter for me.  Garage is horrible. Yard gets real muddy and stinky.  I'm not sure I can take it. 

I have a 4 door jeep wrangler so not sure how many bags I can get in the back with the seats down but I am sure it is quite a bit. How many bags were you looking for? Protein is 16% .

Tab told me they wont do it this year ...They have to get the place ready for it ...she did nt want to do it 2 years in a row .

Since they're not going to host, the Nutty is the front runner.  

DW got one of those big heavy pots for her birthday/christmas and she has been cooking in it a lot. Every time she can. Thing weighs like a ton.  Like  this one only hers is white.  Good thing we have a freezer for the leftovers.  Stew last night. 

I will definitely host then got plenty of land and parking

Ok I am going to message Tab if she doesn't want to host this year I will host the 2015 NY Chickenstock. I have plenty of land, parking, and we can have power for heat lamps if we need them for chicks have outdoor water too. Rancher when are you and the wife going to be out of town would love to make sure it is scheduled so you are able to attend.

i havent let the birds out in 2 days ..i think they are going stir crazy ..i hung a squash i split in half in the coop..i see they ate the seeds but i think the meat part is frozen ..i think i'll hang some apples for them this afternoon..do you all let your birds out when its this cold ..i opened the door for them the other day and shoveled the run for them and they still never came out ..my heated water bowls working great ..the 2 hanging waterers are frozen everytime i go out there ..i am buying more heated waterers ..i also have 3 feeders i fill with pellets ..i have one water and one feeder on one side of the coop and the others on the other side of the coop ..i think a few birds try to keep others from eating so thats why i have 2 diffrent places for them to eat and drink..i cant find any feed with more then 16 % protein ..anyone have any ideas were to find feed with higher protein ..i live in lakewood ..the tsc has feed but i dont see any with higher protein ..any help would be great ..thanks in advance..




rancher i told the wife i want the cast iron set of pans like that one ..the dutch oven and the skillits are the best ..i remember as a kid my mom always had cast iron pans ..i no they aint cheep tho..the dutch ovens are great in the summer and cooking on open fire ..theres a show on tv called cooking in history or something like that .anyways the guy shows ya how to use them and cook on open flames like a fire place ..

Ok I am going to message Tab if she doesn't want to host this year I will host the 2015 NY Chickenstock. I have plenty of land, parking, and we can have power for heat lamps if we need them for chicks have outdoor water too. Rancher when are you and the wife going to be out of town would love to make sure it is scheduled so you are able to attend.

My DD is due at the beginning of May, so we plan to leave the third week of April and be gone the entire month of May. Most likely come back on the 28th. We want to be there early. She's high risk and if you goes early or late, we don't want to miss it.

So we figure the entire month of May. DW should be done with her radiation by the end of March or beginning of April.

I think we should just focus on getting to the picnic and bringing paper products so DW doesn't have to cook. I mean not bringing birds or chicks. We have someone to stay here but I'm not sure I'll be hatching, so they won't have to take care of just the big birds. Now of course that doesn't mean I won't bring anything back.

Mine always have the option whether they want to go out or not. They venture out as long as the snow isnt over a few inches. I always shovel for them so they have a path to the old run. Their feed & water is also outside under a lean to so they need to venture out for that (its connected to the coop & protected from the weather but still not in the coop)

For higher protein feed them raw meat. I have been giving mine more with the wicked cold temps. A friend gave me a lot of venison scraps that I ground & froze. But before that I bought chicken hearts & livers at tops that I ground up. Perhaps you have a butcher nearby that would save you meat scraps?

yeah i have been giving them meal worms but they can get a bit pricey..i have can cat food i am going to try ..i no i read someone say its a pretty good sorce of protein ..i also think i'll boil some eggs and throw them in the blender and give them some of those ..i no they are board out of their minds ..i guess i should try letting them out this afternoon and see if they go ..thanks for the input..

Where do you live Nutty? I thought that I remembered, but it is hard trying to keep every ones location straight.

My birds don't have a choice they have to go out. My coops are just like sleeping and nesting areas. I have a big fenced in run that all my coops are in but it has no top. I have to put the food and water outside so if they want to eat of drink they have to go out. I have these little shelters that I put the food in so that it stays dry and mostly out of the wind. I also have the old duck hut that they like to hang out in. So they come out when ever I come out. I go out several times a day to bring fresh warm water for them to drink I don't have any place to put a heated water bowl so I have to bundle up and go out to make sure that they have water and also to get the eggs that they lays so they don't freeze. My girls lay at all times during the day.

You could scramble them up some eggs to have some more protein? I get my feed from my local Co-op. It is an Egg Producer with a min of 21% protein. The seem to be doing well with it. I think that they sell it at Country Max. Not sure if you have one by you. I know that there are others that are close to you that might know where you might be able to find feed.

Afternoon all. Just got back from a run to the feed store and scored some high energy suet blocks for 99 cents each. Splurged and got some for the cheeps. Its 10 here with the windchill at -10. Have gone out 3 times today and refilled waterers. Put down some pine needles in Legolas run and spread the rest of the bag in the big run. Nobody seems bothered by the cold as they all ran out this morning when I opened the pop doors. Nobody but me anyways. Everyone was a little suspicious of the square things I had put in their runs but once 1 started eating it, everyone jumped in. Might go back and get more for the cold days we are having. Dh did drill a hole in the ham bone left from christmas and hung it in the terrorists run. They have pretty much picked it clean and not just peck at the bone. Keeps them busy. Laying has picked up some now that the heaviest molters are pretty much done. Of course Eowyn, my silkie hen, has decided to go broody. Really? Could you have picked a worse time to do so???

Had to order oil and was pleased to see it had dropped. My daughter in GA informed me she paid 1.89 for gas. I hope ours goes down that low.

Ive seen lots of posts on other sites of people concerned about whether they should heat the coop or bring their chickens inside. I remind them that the wild birds dont have heat or a coop and they do just fine, as do the deer, coyotes and other animals. People always ask me if I feel bad for my chickens cause its so cold. I tell them no because they have adequate food, water, housing and enough feathers to keep them warm. Unless the evil white stuff is falling, they prefer to be outside, even my silkies, no matter the weather.

Hopefully a decision will be made on chickenstock this year as to the who and when. I am hoping to go again but it will depend on how far away it is. Had lots of fun last year and it was nice to put faces to names.
