NY chicken lover!!!!

So I have a question. I'm rebuilding my free range/ laying hen flock. I like an assortment of colors in it and was wondering what anybody's recommendations would be. I'm planning on getting 6-8 hens so if you could get any 6-8 chickens of any breed what you choose. I like to have LF Cochins so I will probably have one of them for a rooster. I was thinking about have some Ameraucanas but what else should I get to have with them. I loved the Comets when I had them but the single color was kind of boring to me. So anybody who has an opinion on something that makes a good layer and looks good free ranging, I'd love to hear it.

Speckled Sussex..................... if you can find them are great birds, Friendly, talkative, calm and decent layers !

I have Australorps too, they are good layers and are calm & friendly. Wyandottes are nice too, no frostbite on that nice rose comb and they come in a lot of colors

I have all 3 breeds in my layer flock !

I don't think its non gmo or organic. But she should state for sure. Its too cheap to be either. My local mill grows a lot of their grains and I asked him if he could do non gmo and he said it would cost too much...
I don't believe it is organic. I'd be surprised as organic runs double the price. Now that I think about it I wonder if those eggs sold at the market are really organic. Perhaps they are $3.79 cheapest in the store.

IT is
It is non GMO and it is organic but it is not labeled as organic and will not be for that price if I want it labeled as organic the price goes way up so I am fine with it not being that way. If you want Certified Organic I can get that for you in Poulin Grain or Blue Seal but the price is definitely going to be more than what I get from Local.

Are we talking about the feed I got from you? If it is I'd be sure to buy more, even if I had to come and get it.

Yes that is the feed we are talking about.it is non gmo and organic the mill I get it from sells the same feed certified for much more but I know the person actually know the whole family so they are bagging it for me as non certified for much less. I am sure I can get the certified from them but the prices more than double actually almost triple so see know point. I do not tell other customers that it is organic or non gmo but figured you guys would understand

Oh I don't mind it being labeled or not as long as I can tell folks it's non gmo feed. I've reputation to maintain. The certification business is why organics cost more. Ridiculous, but such is life.

PM me your address. I'll just need to go buy a truck when things get better or figure a way to get to your place.

Hi everyone. I'm Paula from Syracuse. I'm a big lurker, not so much a poster.

I saw Nutty's post about feed and since we have layers, and soon to be piglets I plan to make a run down their to stock up on 100lb bags of feed since it is so inexpensive!!!

I know there are a few other people in the greater Syracuse area. Would anyone want to order feed and I can pick up? If so we could work something out to help me cover the gas for the trip. You can message me if its easier. I have a pickup and trailer.

Id be interested in a 200 pounds or so of layer ..I live in Jordan ..20 min from you ..depends on when you wanted to go ...how much I would take

Yay!!! I am excited that you are closer to me than I thought.

I'm pretty sure they said its organic. Can anyone confirm? I know it's non gmo.

Mel- I remember the chicks!! So funny that was well before we ever thought we would have land or animala. We just wanted the experience of hatching with the kids. We didn't know about different breeds back then. Do you know what they ended up being?

I don't remember.

. I thinned my flock drastically when we were expecting our 1yo. Now I am getting more and growing again.
