NY chicken lover!!!!

Did you guys see this about a week ago make the national news? Ithaca invited people to visit the Florida Keys!

They said its to cold here, the weather's for the birds! Come back when it warms up.

Well Ithaca is NOT a ski resort so I don't understand the big deal. For me to drive to Ithaca is down hill and treacherous. Even when we do go there is not much there to see. Most of it is parks and gorges. Can't see those in this snow.

I can sit inside here or there, not much difference. I don't like to sit. Which is why I snowblow the drive so often.

I was looking for 30's today...didn't happen. We hit bad roads too...drifted in with white outs! One guy was trying to back down a hill on route 80 because he couldn't make the drifts...scary.

The weatherman is always wrong. I have a good college friend who works for the emergency preparedness center down south and no one heeded the weather warnings...I told her because no one trusted the weatherman to give correct information.

Stay warm & safe all!

In my next life I'm going to be a weather-woman. Where else can you earn good money, never get it right and still not get fired??

I see you've gotten a lot of newbies over the last few months.
I wanted to pop on and say Hello. Everyone's doing well here in CT, been cold but we're hanging on there. Today it's finally nice enough to go outside without a coat! LOL 36 and it feels like a heat wave. I had to get my rabbit hutch cleaned out and moved to the garage. I'm going to use it for some upcoming additions I'm getting next week as well use as a grow out pen for my chicks since they're getting bigger. I've been hatching since November. I got some really nice Silkies in blue and splash. I'll be keeping 1 of the splash and 2 or 3 of the blues. Then I hatched Sizzles, wasn't happy with those because out of 6 or 7 I only had 2 with the correct number of toes one of which was a smooth and I don't need anymore smooths. I really need a blue frizzled Sizzle. Didn't get one so I'm taking a break from hatching those and have moved onto some Cochin eggs I got from someone in AR. I have 5 Mille/Blue Mille eggs going strong in the incubator out of the 15 eggs she sent. Not sure what I'll work on next. I wish my Orp Roo would get busy already. Two of my girls have started to lay and I'd like to start hatching some Orpingtons now that I have nice pen of blues and splash.

I think we may have finally found a house that will work for us. It's a nice sized ranch with 2.8 acres and a 6 stall horse barn. I love it. So we're in the process of getting all the paperwork handled for that. Our lease is up July and our landlord doesn't want to let us out early but the woman selling this house is doing it on her own so she doesn't mind waiting, especially since she doesn't have a house purchased herself yet but does have somewhere to go in the meantime. My goal is to get in there by June or at least start moving in June so I can do a lot of the small stuff my self on the days that the kids are in school. It's in the same town just opposite side.

Hope you all are doing alright in this weather! Spring will be here soon enough and then we'll all be complaining about the heat of summer.

It's a heat wave over here today! 32 degrees and it feels like I could walk around outside without a coat. Frozen rooster, who's been named Alexander, is doing well. His toes are cold but not turning black so I'm hopeful. His outer toes on both feet are still really cold to the touch so he might lose those. I'm not sure how quickly areas affected by frostbite turn black if they're going to be lost. He's eating really well though and he complains to me about his isolation to the tub whenever I walk in the room. Tomorrow he's going out to my little hoop coop to live with the birds that have a heat lamp, and the other two roosters that will now be my flock roosters come spring. I'll just move all three over at once along with the one mixed breed pullet that will also live in the layer flock. I'll have to watch to make sure that the other two roosters don't try to beat him up. He's older and bigger, but with his feet he's clearly at a disadvantage.

Afternoon all. Its a balmy 36 here and everything is melting. The chickens are partying! Dh shoveled off the roof and cleaned up the 3 inches we got last night. That was fun driving down the mountain on an unplowed road at 6am to go to work. I dont know what he burned in my frypan, but my house reeks! Im burning candles to try and kill the smell but its not working! Killng me!

Lynzi--glad you found a place. I hope it all works out for you. Sounds like you got some nice babies there. Im itchin to fire up the bator. Making plans for the first week of march.

Mad crazy at work. I dont know how people have money to spend. Just had to order more heating oil. Im staying out of tsc because if i go in there when they have chicks, I will get myself in big trouble!

Supposed to go back to freezer weather tomorrow and the rest of the week. I hope everyone is soaking in the sun now!

I have a heated dog bowl, never used, and a heated waterer that I got for Christmas and never used. Interested? I'm not that far away from you :)
I have two heated dog bowls. I have heaters for my waterers but I think organisms grow in the warm water if it's not changed. So I prefer to lug fresh water out each morning. I've considered heated food in the dog bowls though.

The chickens back wash. Not as bad as ducks but they do.

What about if he found someone new while you're there? You know to take your place.

He's looking to sell the property come Spring. So we'll see. He doesn't want to list it now because no one will want to until July to move in. Even tho we told him we have no problem with it being listed. I'm wondering what he'll say if we told him we found a place once all the papers are signed. I think he's just playing it very safe to cover his you know what, just like we are doing the same.

I lost my frizzle NN EE roo I hatched last spring a couple days ago. I was pretty disappointed. I'm going to collect what eggs I can from his pen this week, maybe I'll get a few of his babies. This cold has been rough, laying is down and we lost some eggs to freezing.
