NY chicken lover!!!!

It's a red squirrel! Lol! I'm sure rancher knows what a weasel looks like.
Reading on Weasels in NY, didn't know we had two species. Ermine/short tailed weasels are small and USUALLY turn white in winter. Long tailed weasels are bigger and MAY turn white in winter. Both usually turn back in color mid Feb March, depending on weather conditions.
Lets look at it as a sign the weasel knows spring is just around the corner, maybe next week?!!!

My daughter lives in Ithaca. How can you handle chickens with such cold weather and so much snow? I am near Beaufort, SC and I hate going out when it is under 45. I just got my first 2 chickens yesterday and I am so happy with them.

I do know what a red squirrel is and I've caught a few. This is was a weasel.

He was stiff and frozen to garage floor. Someone on another thread asked if it was a mouse trap and no it was a rat trap. The difficulty I have with snagging squirrels in rat traps is because they eat with their paws and grab the bait rather than stick their head in first. I have caught a few squirrels but they are tough.

Not to mention I saw it as it ran into the garage. I can send it to you if you'd like.

Evening All,

@LuvMyChicks1491 - Congrats on your bator!! And don't worry - you'll have no issues whatsoever with that thing holding temps! Mine is in my back spare room, with a door leading to the deck where we let the dogs out - half the time I come in here to the door wide open from the dogs letting themselves in after someone leaves it cracked for them.

I've never had an issue so far.

@rancher hicks - Good catch with that weasel! That could have been a devastating loss if he got into any of your coops! Hope that was the only one!

And Yes! Tractor Supply here has gotten their chicks in too. Good thing they are breeds I'm not really interested in...yet. I thought about adding some more layers this year but I'm going to wait until we move. Hopefully find some adults or pullets. We may be moving sooner than later - April/May instead of June. Our basement flooded Sunday (was thought to be fixed) and Monday and I ended up losing a chick over it. That was the last straw for me. We've had more headaches living here and I cannot wait to get out. I don't care if we break the lease. The problems with this house have inconvenienced us enough and we're done. Definitely not getting what we pay for here.

Its finally starting to warm up here. Been in the 30's last two days. Again tomorrow. I have new feathered friends arriving tomorrow morning.

I can get pheasant chicks from 4H for us to raise and release. Has anyone done this? Are they hard to raise or the same as chickens? We raise them for about 8wks before release.
