Lapeerian, sorry about your horse. To me the sign of a true animal lover is someone who will do what's best for their animals even if it breaks their heart.

Yes folks I said I might get a silkie hen or two. They and Cochins are good broodies. At least as far as I understand. I did have a pair of Silkies once but the rooster was not friendly. Yes silkies are Aliens from another planet.

Cochins will hatch anything.

As for not roosting. Buckwheat and Frenchy both sleep in a nest box. I let them since they're old girls.

Horses do hide any pain - so if you spotted it as consistent, then it was time. And 13 years of love is a great life for a horse!

Do any of you have any suggestions as to what I should add to my flock come spring? I already plan on adding 25 meat birds every 2 months until my freezer is to my liking, but I would also like to add a bit of color to my group of egg girls. Possibly something that lays pretty colored eggs as well as adds character to the flock. I would prefer to purchase local, if possible.

Just the size and lack of fkexion of her joints tells me that she can't last much longer, still hiding her pain though. She had an awful time getting a hoof trim back in the spring. And she is actually 25, we've just owned her 13 years. Bought her a few months after the knee kick injury.

Will you be coming to the annual NY Chickenstock in spring? You'll have lots of opportunity to set up sales with people here and then pick up at chickenstock if you are. For color you can't go wrong with easter eggers - both they and the eggs they lay can be tons of different colors. Then you have olive eggers, an offshoot of EEs that lay eggs in shades of olive. There's also Welsummers for a nice terracotta colored egg and marans for a deep chocolate colored egg. And if you want a bird that's as black as black can be, I will probably have ayam cemani hatching eggs, cull chicks, and maybe even some breeder quality chicks depending on how my hatches go.

Well now my first batch of chicks were hatchery. I ordered eight different breeds three of each with the exception of the Frizzles. Those had to be ordered straight run so I got four. Two were roosters. Point, you could go that route and be sure you get all pullets.

However EE's while being hybrids lay and assortment of colored eggs. As opposed to Ameraucana that only lay blue.

Not all EErs are hybrids, read the history of the Ameraucana's they came from the original breed of EE, EE came first, and then they standardized them through selective breeding for certain colors and traits such as the muffs. Some EE are just 'non-standard' Ameraucana's.
EE can lay blue depending on where you get them, some 'real' Ameraucanas lay blue green, again depending on where you get them.
Many hatchery EE can lay any color, and can be called 'hybrids', because that is what they are, along with every breed they sell, not a one of them is 100% pure breed of any breed.

The ones I got from Meyer's, two had muffs, two didn't. Of the two that didn't have muffs, one is golden laced, the other doesn't even resemble a EE, actually neither of them two do, she's buff, and is small, she lays a olive egg. My best layers even in cold winter has been hatchery EE. I was hoping for a blue, only got green and olive.
Showed my dad a dozen of their eggs, he had never heard of them, said "They look rotten" Lol!
