Okay I'm caught up. We're all sick here. DW has been up cooking when she should have been in bed but she doesn't listen to me. She's there now. DD and hers are moving out which will make things easier for her. My lord have mercy! DD went to the new place and didn't both kids wake up crying. The oldest wet the bed the other woke because of her.
Now I change diapers and all that, and I did call DD to come home but it took her a bit of time and DW wouldn't just let the GD sit on the couch naked til her mother came home. She had to wash her and get her in some new cloths. Good garden o' peas, she can hardly walk! Missed two therapy appointments and a doctors appt.
I've been dragging myself out to let the chickens out and only making sure they have food and water. Collecting eggs in the evening at close up time. I felt like I'd been hit by a truck. I did get my flu shot but never had a reaction before, but with everyone else sick don't think it was that. This weather has been great and I've still got to pull in the hoses, wrap the roses, and I can't think.
I'm sorry to hear about Eunice. Poor thing. I haven't been letting the Daisies out for that reason. Just afraid they'll wander too far and me not being about to go out and have a look see.
They do go into the woods, big time forages. Both hens are laying now too. I tried to sell them $50 (too much?) for the three but no takers, so I guess I'm stuck with them.
Tab, congrats on the job. I guess I have an affection (perhaps the wrong word, I'm not real smart) for you and Trav, because I remember the days of me and DW having to load up the kids to take them to the sitter in the dead of winter and shoveling out the car and I sure don't miss those days. I wouldn't wish that on a Silky............well maybe a Silky.
I agree with the chick order. Six is to few for a winter shipment. Is there no one nearby you can get chicks from. Or eggs. I expect to sell my incubator since I'm working toward giving up the chickens all together.
I am perplexed though as I think Frenchy laid an egg or two. She's going to be EIGHT! If she makes it to the end of February that is. I've been finding eggs in the box she sleeps in. I know they're most likely Buckwheats or my other frizzle hen. Buckwheats half maran and the shell on her eggs are smother. Also bigger than Frenchy's. The word is chickens only lay for a couple of years, isn't that true? Could Frenchy still be laying? I did hatch two of hers this year but both being roos they had to go. I'm tempted to try to hatch this one, but that would mean more eggs and more chicks. HELP ME JESUS!
I do have a new hen laying a super Olive green egg. DD, ew! that looks like baby poop! Such is life.
I'd posted the C.Rocks on CL and had a couple of folks contact me but were no shows. They hadn't started laying at the time, but now all six hens are laying and I'm getting 4-6 eggs a day from them. Everyone has picked up. They usually do though. I did leave the lights on for a few days and switched them all to "egg producer" 21%. I'm getting plenty of eggs. I think that general layer 16% works for commercial layers or perhaps not. Anyhow I hate no-shows. Why can't people call and say, "I've changed my mind" or "I can't make it". Just not showing up and me waiting all day, I wouldn't wish that on a Silky...............well maybe a Silky.
I do have three Delaware pullets I think might be ready for the coop. This weather will help though they've been without heat for sometime.
Then I've two in the basement to move up to where the Dels are in the back room.
Like a fool I bought one of those pens that connects to those cheap chicken barn things that TSC sells and may not use it. I bought it sometime ago and it's still in the box. I didn't expect things to change, but I'm tired and can't leave town. I can't ask DD and hers that are moving out to take care of the chickens as they are leaving on a bad note. Crazy thing is I think they're going to be glad they did. Well he will anyhow.
Last I saw TSC here has another for $47. I figured to use mine for a broody pen. Not sure that will happen though I've suspect a couple of EE's have tried to go broody. This weather is throwing them off I think. ME? I love it, I don't care about global warming one darn bit. Only bad thing is if it floods NYC all the crazies might move up here. Though I do feel bad for the homeless. I've been homeless and I wouldn't wish that on a Silky....................well maybe a Silky.
Someone mentioned Araucana? I have a Lavender rooster, Shorty, If you want him. He's not a great specimen and not real friendly, but that may be because I don't hold my birds a lot. I got him in a trade and he's been okay though like all us short males we're the first to get picked on. I've got him by himself right now. I swear the roosters are all getting frisky what with this warm weather.
Well I'm caught up for now. Hello to all the new folks welcome to BYC. I'm Rancher Hicks of course. I don't own horses so I'm not real stable. Get it?
Have a nice day,
Rancher
ps. I would never let a Silky be homeless, but I would my ex wife and anyone else in her crazy nutter family.
