NY chicken lover!!!!

Went in to the local hardware store today to get a key made, and they have their chick order forms out (they come in early April)! AHHHHH!!!
While chatting with the employee (he's not the first person to say this to me), he said, "Tully doesn't have chicken police, don't worry too much about getting in trouble for having over five. Just don't get a rooster!" I do plan to get a couple more come spring. One of my current four is sort of a dud- she stops laying for weeks at any tiny stress or change.

Does anyone care to share their opinions of Light Brahmas, Silver Laced Wyandotte and Ameraucaunas? I'm leaning toward Wyandottes. I'm looking for egg production and a docile personality. They live in a pen, and on rare occasions I will bring them into the yard for an hour or so under my watch. I love the idea of the colored eggs, but it seems like Ameraucaunas might be on the flightier side? My plan is to add three, so I'll need to find someone to split an order with, but it shouldn't be a problem.

Well it looks like I'm not the only one that's been falling! I fell yesterday walking down the hill from my water spigot carrying a five gallon bucket full of water. Managed to just kind of slide down and didn't even spill any water, but I had reached out to my deck to try to stop myself and apparently I've sprained my pinkie. I wouldn't have been injured at all if I'd just let myself fall  Ah well, it's not serious, thank goodness.

Seems like there's lots of ice out there with the weather getting warm then cold again. I've been slipping & sliding quite a bit, not usually landing on my butt, tho tweaking out my back pretty good as I right myself. Hope everyone stays safe & those w injuries heal quick!

Bucket waterers w nipples & heaters:
400

It's just a bucket w lid, the horizontal nipples (I've read the vertical ones are tough to keep thawed) and a small aquarium heater on its lowest setting. @baunlee it's super easy to put together and the chickens took to it pretty quickly. The only trouble I've had is that when I open the lid, any shavings or debri on the top falls into the water. Just reminds me to dump and refill it.

I only have 1 SLW. She is super calm, but not overly friendly - she tolerates me, but hates to be touched! She is a so-so layer. For good layers I don't think you can beat RIRs, Welsummers or Delawares. My 2 Delaware ladies are 4 now and still 'putting out'.

ouch ...my hand understands ...Be careful ...you & everyone ...it has frozen into glazed ice everywhere

Hope everyone is healing well after their thrills & spills! I have to put down wood ashes around the run. The RIRs' came running out this afternoon and several did a sideways slide....

it was funny. They always hate it when you laugh at them...
