I would trust Chickengirls judgment of rooster character. She wouldn't give you a bad roo.

The eggs from your hens should be fertile for up to 3 weeks with the best chances being within the first week. I'd incubate all the eggs on Friday that have been laid between now and then. In 8 weeks (+ 3week incubating) you'll have a good idea of what chicks are worth keeping and which to sell or give away.

I also have Brabanter roosters if you want them. You're not too far from me (Ilion) if you want to visit and let me know. I was going to send them to freezer camp on Wednesday. They're friendly enough, but I have too many. They aren't as large as a SLW but have cool spangles.

thank you. That means a lot that you trust my rooster choices. I can't see passing on mean so instead it gets processed, the good guys get kept or rehomed to needy hens.

I've never thought I'd have NN either, thought they were ugly, I think their pretty cool looking now that I have them. One of the best dual purpose, grow at a good rate, less protein going to feathers, easier to pluck, half or less feathers. You don't notice it unless you look the feathers cover up the bare patches, half the breast, half fhe legs, the vent area, all bare, and they have no 'hair' to deal with when processing. Thin skin that roasts up nice, the French consider them the best tasting chicken in the world.
They're supposed to lay pretty good also, mine haven't started yet, but did grill up a couple and they we're pretty good, along with a bear loin roast

I have 15 ladies here, would getting 2 boys be acceptable or is that too tight? Could they all hang in the same coop or would I need a second? And....if anyone wants some base white Leghorns, I have 3 that drive me batty, free to a new home (they run like crazy and peck the heck out of Ma, she's not thrilled with them) I have Freddie's no-crow collar (just arrived in the mail this morning) would be easy to get another - I don't want to bother the neighbors during the school year-----their kids are little yet.

I work nights currently, so I wouldn't be able to head out to collect a roo until the weekend. I am awaiting to hear back from the local friend with the barred rock, everyone here is against me incubating eggs (we really DO have too much going on right now). But I wouldn't be opposed to having 2.

Just showed Pops a pic of a NN......said that'd give him nightmares, no way! LOL

If you get rid of the 3 hens, one rooster should be enough. Before I lost my older girls to a predator this spring, I had around 20 hens with one main rooster but would keep a cockerel as backup. I don't count the banty roo, other than a stalker. I did have an extra cockerel last year, but culled him once he beat up the old man. I know I'll have to get rid of the other roo this fall, because it just isn't working with so few hens. He was from my GLW so hate to, but know he isn't happy. Been turning out the Chickenstock youngsters in the afternoon, he likes to grab the little pullets. Not acceptable, but I know he is frustrated.

Hubby considers NN an abomination and doesn't want it to reproduce lol. Daughter thinks he is special though. Cute with his fluffy bow-tie.

I'll take the 3 hens if no one else claims them, can trade ya another roo

I may just overrule Hubby and keep the abomination. I call him Stitch (was Lilo until the comb turned red). With the almost non-existent flat rose comb, he will be good for winter. I'll have to post pics later, I took a few while I sat out with them this weekend. And his blue color is pretty

Well I just don't get it. DW has been complaining it's to hot and had the AC on. Too cold for me. Now she's complaining she's cold! I think she's just plain nuts! I don't think she's invested in the Power company.

Thank you for the offer, I'll ask the family. I have a longtime friend trying to give me a barred rock roo, I dunno what to think. No one really talks about the boys temperments on the breed review page, but Mom and Dad like the coloring he has. Freddie will be a **** tough act to follow. Do you have a photo, by chance?

The odds of getting a nice boy are good, IMO.

I had a mean BR but never kept any of his sons. Wish I had. BECAUSE , I also had a mean Maran roo but his father and son are just fine.

Now my Delaware roos have always been good, though I've heard otherwise from those who've hatched egg. I've never had a mean Del roos so I don't understand why anyone would.

My personal experience with cockerels is limited. I've had one orpington boy, big old brat he was. I have 4 pure spitzhauben boys, all GREAT in every way. From my flock I hatched 5 boys all from spitzhauben dad', 2 from WL mom's 2 from rir mom's 1 from a BA mom. My favorite mix is the rir/spitzhauben. They are beautiful and so mellow. I sold all but 2 of them as I have to many. The above mixes threw some nice pullets too. Very docile and beautiful.

She can travel a little ways but I'm to far of a drive for her. It would really be special to find her someone closer. Can anyone make any suggestions? Thank you!

She can travel a little ways but I'm to far of a drive for her. It would really be special to find her someone closer. Can anyone make any suggestions? Thank you!

the local woman who's desperate to give me her BR (oh sweet Jesus, what have I done??) has silkies. I'll ask her for some photos, she's all of like 5 minutes away from me.
