I noticed my garden fence is sagging and the pine tree has engulfed the little duck house that sits under it. Even though I have a lot of older chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys, they are looking at it and saying no thanks. Except for the geese; everything is something to play with to them.

We got the white stuff here, too. Luckily though it's supposed to warm back up by Thanksgiving so hopefully it won't be aroung long. I still need to get my new pig proof gate built so I can let my birds out to range without worrying about the stupid pig eating all their food. It came running the very second it heard me get over there yesterday to try to eat the food. It and the neighbor's five ducks.

I think I'm just going to keep the ducks. They're practically mine anyway. Eat at my place, spend all day at my place, use my duck pool, etc. They just go back over to the neighbor's to sleep.

DW and I are in for the time being. I pulled all the hoses in so now it's back to the milk jug watering system. Still need to get the plastic to wrap the runs with. Can't do it too early or they'll be steamed chickens.

Chickens can deal with hot and humid. Better cold and dry.

I have a bully issue in the flock. I have 7 EE and they are mean as sin. I have a 6×8 coop with a run they can have. My problem is that it's FRIGGING FREEZING and I'm afraid there isn't enough heat with just them. Do yall think they will be OK? If not they are June babies, will they still be tender? Or would any of you like to try rehabilitation on these buggers...

So this year the flock decided snow is bad and icky. The duck won't even go in the snow.

These boys would not go into their coop because the ramp had snow on it.
I scooped them up and brought them inside. As soon a they were dry they started crowing. What a ruckus. It was funny...at first. Then I started getting the stink eye from the hubs, cause, you know,you can't interrupt a giants game. So back to the Batchelor pad they went with a nice bowl of oatmeal and corn. I hope this doesn't become a habit. One more thing to shovel this winter.

Sorry I haven't been on much lately. As of right now I have no birds. I'm happy to report most found good homes the rest in freezer camp. After all that our landlord decided to take our house off the market. Kicking myself for getting rid of them, but everything happens for a reason, right? Anyway it's been way to quiet for me. No crowing, no chickens begging for treats at my feet. No quacking and honking. Even with my new little girl I feel to inactive. It was ok when I had the kids in football and at play rehearsals. Now that things have quieted down we decided we NEED chickens. Getting everyone to agree on a breed is next to impossible.

That being said, we put 36 silkie eggs in the bator today. It was the breed that I could get the kids to agree on....kinda. As a family we love silkies. They are so friendly and easy to work with and the kids want to use them to show in 4-h. They are very popular in my area so if I can sell eggs or chicks I can fund my future breeds. I found a pasture I can rent in my area and have a market for any eggs I produce. Still in light of all that we just went through we are starting out small.

We are also going to try to get some of the 55 flowery hens soon. I have heard good things about them and it would be exciting to try something new. The decision was made easy because all the other breeds I want are pretty much not available in the next few weeks to months.

Sorry I'm not able to spend days reading to catch up on all that I missed, hope everyone is well. We had snow today as I'm sure most of you did. I actually missed going out to shovel out the runs. And in case you were wondering what 36 silkie eggs in a brinsea eco looks like.....
