NY chicken lover!!!!

So, on Tuesday I took in a group of OEGBs that someone dumped on a property across from one of my coworkers. Poor little things were just left to die. They all have scaly leg mites and I've begun treatment, but seem healthy otherwise. They are of course quarantined and if they come through the winter with no signs of illness I'll keep them. One of the roosters had spurs that were about to grow back into his legs and all of them had nails that were very long and starting to curl into odd shapes as if they had never been let on the ground to scratch and were instead kept indoors in a breeding pen. If this is true, dumping them was even crueler because they would have had no idea how to find food or survive on their own (not that they would have survived the winter anyway). Strangely enough, they all also have leg bands, as if they really were breeder birds that someone just dumped when they were done with them. Hopefully they come through quarantine fine and they can stay.

Devona - You are very wise, especially since AI is roaring through Europe and the UK right now. Everyone cross your fingers....

So that's much better.

Wow pyxis that is nice of you to take them in! Can't help our love of birds. For leg mites can you actually SEE the mites on the leg? scary. Hahah that one spur reminds me of the people growing out their nails all curly in the guiness book of world records haha

They also have a kit for making a smaller desktop model.
I bought the Hova 1588 with the new turner that rolls the eggs and you just unplug it for hatching don't have to remove it, doesn't hold 42 eggs though if you have big eggs. A comparable size Brinsea is around three times the $$.
Reason I went with the hova I want to hatch many eggs in one hatch. I'd looked at TSC farm innovators with fan and turner, a lot of bad reviews and on BYC also. A lot of people recommended the hova. I thought about getting the kit and build my own but much easier just to buy one. After getting it though I wish I built one, don't see how the hova is worth no $200.
Just a fan heater control and the turner motor, rest probably cost a $1. The egg turner is just a sheet of plastic, body of incu just thin styrofoam.
I had a great hatch with the hova and will be using it again a couple times the spring but if I could do it over I would have built one with the small kit and a minifridge and spent less on a better incubator.
I had a hovabator once and all the eggs died.. Hated that thing - temp was just too unstable. I have a brinsea now, almost 100% hatches but just too small for me.

Well my chore today was to clean out the baby coop ...the bedding is now where the potatoes were in the garden ..above the snow and under the snow ...I didnt let the snow stop me ...I shoveled a path then carted it all to the garden ..
.I ve got it down to the dirt ..in the baby coop ..it needs to dry out a little before I put plastic in there and then the bedding for the winter ..

It will look like this when I am done

The Babies kept coming back into the baby coop ...It was bed time when I was finishing up ..I carried them back several times ..
Cowboy was ...like" Lucky doesnt like me in here " So I carried him back to the roost I wanted them on .a couple of times too .
.It will be interesting to see how the 3 all get along in the morning .( Lucky , Cutie , and Cowboy
They are all settled in the big coop now ...Babies on the left ..Cute Candy is so Photogenic.... Oldies on the right. Lucky Patrolling the bottom
