NY chicken lover!!!!

A quick update, if anyone was wondering:

These are my little peeps at 4 weeks, minus the EE. They are a couple days shy of 6 weeks now.

One of the feather-footed ones is mostly dark, and larger (it's actually the one between the barred ones in the photo). The other is smaller, and looks like a regular Light Brahma, with a bit of random black speckling.

The 5 that I had/have no idea about all look like Light Brahma, but no fluffy feet, except one sprouted three foot feathers!

One of the Barred ones is just the sweetest snuggliest thing I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, the other is kind of stoic, thoughtful, and cautious (and larger).

And the Easter Egger is shy, does not like to be handled at all, but real pretty - lots of white, with brown, black, and grey speckled through, and that Brahma neck. It's cheeks never got fluffier though, so now it kind of blends in with everyone else, except it's the largest one of the bunch.

I cant believe how much they drink.... Lol

I know right

All in that cute grow out stage -These 2 are probably the ROOS

I actually doubled my order from the Marans breeder to increase my odds of a good hatch for you and Metella who both expressed interest. I'll bring all extras to Chickenstock - they'll be about 4 weeks old at that point. You're close enough that you can pick them up before then.

I haven't decided what I'm keeping vs. selling because the hatch is so risky. 106 shipped eggs would average a 35-45 chick hatch. One breed I ordered (Brabanter) has worse rates. The others could be better. Depending on what/how many hatch I'll probably sell for $7-$10 each.
yes I think I am closer. It will be interesting to see what happens. I have driven across the state both ways for chicks.

tao, who in ohio has the blue birchens? I like to keep a list of the blue birchen breeders (in addition to black copper and black birchen) on my word document since there are SO few. So far I only have

  • Brickhaven Acres
  • Gold Feather Farms
  • Rising Phoenix Farm
  • Laurel Meadows

In other news, I finally found someone that sells La Fleche hatching eggs YASss
I put a couple of egg under a hen I have that is broody. There are a couple more that I have but I've not set up the incubator and may now. I think/hope Buckwheat has gone broody. If she has I'll put the next eggs under her.

Funny that my hens show little markings but EE/OE 's fathered by the roo have plenty of markings. I'll have to separate all new hens so I can cross them back to their father/ Brothers. Egg color isn't great but they lay a nice sized egg. OE's eggs are nice sized too.

I am very tempted to buy my own incubator, but it's a pretty big decision. The top on my list is the brinsea maxi advance. Lots of opinions over in the hatching forums. I'd prefer to get a really good incubator now vs replacing it in a year or two. Cost is still a factor, so I've ruled out the brinsea ex line. Do the prices ever go down? Would it be cheaper next year?

Hi all, trying to catch up!
(This is a copy of my earlier post from the Chickenstock 2017 list...)

I have a bantam Wyandotte who just went broody.
Does anyone have a half dozen bantam eggs I could buy / beg / borrow or bum?
Or, failing that, I may order hatching eggs & have wee chicks at Chickenstock. I'm leaning towards Bantam Ameraucanas or Bantam Wyandottes (BLR if I can get them).
Any interest in those?

*This little hen I'd such a militant broody, of I don't get some eggs under her soon things could get ugly in the coop.

If you're interested in either supplying eggs or would be interested in either of the breeds I'm thinking of, please PM me or text 931 802-4378. Thanks.

Brinsea does sometimes have sales. I love my two Brinseas (I have an Octagon 20 Eco and 40 Eco) but they are pricey. My first one I actually got by putting out a wanted ad on BYC here for a used one and someone sold mine to me at a really good price, so that's something you can try.

Additionally if you're looking for more egg space than the Maxi, you might look into an Incuview from Incubator Warehouse. More space, all digital, less than $200, and all the people I know with them love them.

34 outside, 9 chicks inside. I have 3 incubators and a Brinsea Eco Warmer and a Premier Eco warmer. I mostly hatch for myself, to get different color egg layers. I have a barnyard mix flock in one coop, 4 seniors in another coop, and 9 chicks in the house -5 are leaving in 2 months and 4 breda chicks are staying here to go with my 4 adult breda hens.
My flocks contain a rir langshan roo, bredas, polish, barnevelder, welsummer, blue laced red wyandotte, easter eggers I hatched last year, a legbsr, rir, tetra, olive egger, bantam ee, 3 ameracaunas, and 3 easter eggers I bought from a friend in October.

My 3 incubators have duck eggs in one for a friend who asked me to hatch for her and 6 of her barred rock and australorp eggs, and my bator with my barnyard mix eggs .

Howdy from southern NY. I'm from Long Island and plan on getting chickens in the near future. Just doing some research before diving right in. Our town is a bit tight with ordinances. They allow a maximum of 6 hens, roosters are with special permits only I believe. This suits me fine since I'm new at this and planned on starting with 4 hens. I'll keep digging through the site, hopefully find all the answers I'm looking for. Just wanted to introduce myself.

Thanks for the advice for finding one used!

I know I'll want something with a turner, I'm not sure I can remember to turn the eggs enough - spring is busy with all the kids doing sports and other activities, so I know I'd forget. I'll take a look at the incuview. My husband was telling me to just get the largest capacity possible - but I think limiting myself might be a good idea....
