NY chicken lover!!!!

Grandma, Are you saying that most all Breeds are Messy> we have only had Silkies and found them to be clean.
Yes ...somewhat ..
Look at your roosts... are they over your bins ? or They are probably roosting on them ..Take them out I guess or Try adding another roost for them .
They do tend to roost on anything higher than the ground
sometimes chickens can be encouraged to go out if you sprinkle scratch outside ..
Mine go out rain or shine or snow coz they know they are getting Scratch

How I deal with the poop is with deep litter ..every couple days I stir the bedding ( Especially under the roosts) and I add some fresh leaves or grass on top .
Twice a year I clean everything out and put it in the garden

Summer wine nine bark. I got two end of season discount. Nice to plant for chickens to hide under from predators. Surround it with poultry wire til it gets established.

I am going to have to look for one of those for the north end of the pen. I have an established lilac at the south end and the love going under that. When does this bloom?

It blooms in late spring. There are other nine barks too. I also got three Amber Jubilee. HomeDepot had a sale 75% off so I spend a bit. Don't be afraid of smaller sizes. It saves money and younger plants sometimes do better.

Isn’t to late to plant, I’ve only ever planted bulbs in the fall?
it is a little late ...esp coz we have snow ...but they are so cheap now if they have any left ..it is the best time to buy .. I have planted shrubs in the fall and have them survive ..
Not sure if it was this late ..I am hoping for some warm weather again before winter sets in

As long as the ground is not super cold it should be ok. Plant as directed then mulch really well to help preserve warmth.

I've planted tulips with snow on the ground. As long as the ground is not frozen. I have a drill bit for bulbs.
After you plant, mulch them up good. I surround mine with poultry wire and fill the with leaves or straw. . Too bank them with snow as you can. Snow is a good insulator.
Wegmans is selling pines for $24.99 but it's not to late to plant them either. I hope to get a couple in the ground.

I planted two verburnum, Snow flake yesterday. Plant things on the edges of your yard or woods that get some sun. Somethings I got 75% off were only $5.75 each. As I said don't be afraid of small sizes. Even scraggily they'll take shape as the get bigger. This is what I'm shooting for.

Garden shops will take all their end of season shrubs and put them all together and then cover them with compost all in a big pile. In spring uncover them and their good to go.
