Don't wanna take a chance on a cockerel. Got attached to the last one and had a hard time giving him away. Thanks

No worries, I understand that completely, it's hard to let them go. I'll definitely have more next spring, the hens are always hatching and so am I, lol.

Reporting on Dr. Whitings MESSY CHICKENS: The Gal that gave them to me DID NOT
tell me they COULD NOT KEEP the Whitings in their Chicken House....He husband told me
He had to build a Chicken Tractor for them..,and they wer NOT allowed in the COOP.

I called her and told her....we could NOT keep them because they were too MESSY. Her husband said...NO PROBLEM...he had found a new home for them.

They came and picked them up. GREAT. Now we must wait for a warm day so we can
clean our coop. Of course now we must look forward to cleaning and then increasing
our flock. Aria

I don't close my coop. I leave their little door open into their run just incase they need to get out. I think the others are right and they just didn't how. I'm going to the coop after dark now and putting them in.

Even with a run it's risky to not close them up. Weasels and coons can easily get in.

All sick birds should be quarantined.

Chickens can stay warm, without heat IF they feathered out. I have Big Delores and for some reason she didn't roost all summer but she's roosting now. Don't know what was wrong she always roosted before. Then this year she slept in the straw in the corner. She's about 6 I think. Frenchy who turns 10 in Feb sleeps in the bottom nest box and I let her.

There is a book on Open coops that some might be interested in. You can google and find it I'm sure.

I know sick birds should be quarantined, I took it to the vet. They weren't sick til they got hypothermic sleeping outside. They are fully feathered adult birds. Vet told me sometimes unusual things just happen. Not everything is always by the book. Go figure it happened to me.

I won't be having any issues with things getting in my coop thru the run. My run is covered with galvanized small mesh panels and the whole run is made of the same thing. Needed heavy duty and tight cause I live out in the middle of no where. Hence why I opt to leave it open. Have had chickens a long time in this set up and have not lost one to a predator...yet.
