anyone go to the batavia auction? I went to see what happens at that sort of thing and came home with a BR roo for my BR hens! Was not as cheap as I would have hoped for an auction roo, knowing that I paid $10 for my last purebred roo, but still ok. I thought no one would be biddin on a roo since I hear plenty of people give roos away. Paid $11 for him. Then spent the afternoon trying to arrange my chickens. built a new coop of sorts in the garage for the chicks and let the new roo and his new hens in their side of the coop. he just went in, he's been in the run all day...gotta go check where he roosted before the lights go out.
I feel like the poor roo had a bad day...he has a bruised face and some blood on his comb. I figured he got in a fight with another roo, but when we got him home we realized that the cage he was in was upside down! the opening on the bottom! now we wonder if the cage took a tumble and that's how he got bruised and battered. He is doing good and soooo handsome!!!
Lovin the new roo, but now I seriously need to get more run space. kinda freakin out about how many roos I have and worried that someone will get hurt. My broody hatched out 2 roos and 2 hens, not too bad. I still don't know about the bantam cochins...definatley 1 roo and 1 hen, but idk about the other 2.
Saw a guy at the auction that I have been to his house, he had an add on CL and I went to see what he had. When I got there, birds (of all sorts...peacocks, turkeys, quail, chickens) were crowded in filthy conditions. I asked how long he had been in the business (expecting something like 20yrs) and he said only a few. He had about 20yrs worth of poop all over everything is what I was thinking. He didn't want to sell any of the birds I wanted to buy, but had a bunch in some brooders. My point is, that it upset me to see this guy there buying all sorts of birds! I felt he didn't have adequate conditions for the birds he already has and he bought MANY more! He even bid on my roo. I was very reluctant to buy birds from him due to the conditions, almost wanted to save a few. ugh
to think, I cleaned my coop yesterday top to bottom and was disappointed this morning when it was all poo'ed on again. It looked so nice for a few hours
Still need to perfect the amount of shavings, too many get kicked out of the coop.
Also, was wishing I had a BYC sweatshirt (or maybe a jacket cause it was chilly) to see if anyone from this site was there.
Anyone has Bantam Mille Fleurs? my DH fell in love with a trio at the auction, even bid on them (behind my back), but didn't want to pay too much for birds that I didn't pre-approve. (wise DH) Even after I told him all I wanted was the BR roo cause if we got more than him I would need to use his garage as a coop. lol, he is willing to sacrifice his garage (he built it by hand, by himself). and even funnier... we moved the chicks to the garage and he is building a run for them tomorrow. I love my DH, best ever. but he is an enabler, lol.
enough rambling, hope y'all enjoy the weekend and our partly sunny skies!
