NY chicken lover!!!!

Cass, have you considered getting a killing cone. Metal ones are sold, somewhere, but we bought traffic cones from lowes and cut the ends off to the point where the roos fit in just right. We nailed them to a 2 x 4 which is nailed between 2 perfectly placed trees.

How ironic that everyone is talking about processing their birds. I have finally made the decision to have my dh take care of Mumbles, my silkie roo, this weekend. The last straw was when I thought he had hurt one of the silkie pullets really bad. She is fine but that was it. I have 3 scars from him and although I love him and love holding him and petting him (and he loves it too) his propensity to being mean to my family, me and his little flock is too much to live with. I have a blue silkie roo, little man, who is a very nice boy who treats the girls well and is respectful of us. He doesnt use every opportunity to sneak attack as soon as your back is turned. I will shed my tears but know that I have done the right thing. All part of animal raising.

We have a killing cone, but they were so strong they used their wings to wiggle up the cone , so I held their legs until they passed so IF they got out they didn't get away. Only one of them actually was threatening to actually get out, but I didn't want to take the chance. Our neighbors have little girls and I didn't want a chicken with it's neck bleeding to run around where they might see it. I probably didn't have to hold them. I probably could have tied their legs together so even if they wiggled out of our cone they wouldn't be able to run....BUT the thought of picking up a wounded bird ...well, I would have wanted to heal it, instead of eat it. I'm a big softy.

They are very nice, I'm happy for you.

I'm glad to hear that Berkshire View is a good processor. I'm prepared to process one or two birds myself, but it'd be worth it to me to have 25 or so meaties or a couple of turkeys or hogs done professionally, if only because I don't want to make a hash of things.

Speaking of hogs, I'm going in with three other folks on a pasture-raised hog. That will be some fantastic pork.

I'd actually be interested in going in on a cow/steer as well, as I have a big freezer that needs filling.

I still haven't fallen victim to the allure of the Porter's website and their experimental crossbreed poult assortment, but I'm teetering on the edge. I could always sell off some of the poults at cost, as I don't really need fifteen turkeys running around here, especially since some of them will be big birds. Decisions, decisions...

I briefly thought about those turkeys too, but don't need 15 either...

I have been waiting for another Ideal special on meaties.

I was going to buy a couple of piglets until I realized our trailer is out of commission and we would have no way to get them to the butcher. Got to get DH on that project ASAP!

Does anyone fairly local to me (albany is fine) still have any LF eggs suitable for hatching? Mutts are fine, just no bantams/silkies/ducks. Would prefer a mixed bag of chickens so I get a few surprises. I'm looking to get eggs for the NYD hatch and would prefer to get them locally if I can. My eggs aren't as fertile as I'd hoped by now but I'll throw in a few of mine to the bator just to see what happens!!

Set date is the 11th, so I guess I'd have to meet you on the 10th (ish) - just PM me with what you have and what they'd cost!

Well it's a good morning. Picked the chicks up at 7:00am and all are alive. Needless to say I'm in a good mood. Moved the first batch to the back room which is not heated other than an electric oil heater. The do have the red heat light of course and they seemed fine. Sleeping in groups around the brooder. These look as though they won't mature as fast as my Dels so they'll have plenty of time in the brooder room.

I have a Weider weight set in there and forsale. If I sell it I'll have more room for growing birds. I hadn't wanted to buy new chicks but I had to strike while the iron was hot. Plus the seller comes highly recommended by Kathinmo. She would have to be my second favorite on BYC after Speckledhen.

Now Happy, you know DW would kick me out to sleep with the hens if I do anything more. I still haven't told her what I paid for the new chicks.

Featherz - I got eggs but don't know how far you want to drive. EE's and some Orps that may be mixed, since Iv'e got the Lav, buffs, whte and blacks and a BBS all together. They're fairly new layers.

What can you afford? $5? All money from eggs goes to an Orphanage the church supports in India. I don't like to sell hatching eggs but for India I will. They have 25 new orphans and a new house built. Of course not the type we consider a house. Lord have mercy the bunk beds are three high and have plywood mattresses and are made out of 2x4's. We get reports of how things are going and our Pastor and Dr. Eugene went over for a visit to see how things are going.

When Bro. Charles and Sis Joyce came over the first time, she had had a dream of a place with white carpeting on the floor. The thing is she had never seen snow, so when she got off the plane it had snowed the night before and there was the white carpeting from her dream.

Sorry but I do believe in miracles.

I do have to ask, what is the "NYD" hatch?

Well take care folks,

Rancher

Rancher --

Would love some of your eggs, but unfortunately you are three hours away from me.

NYD hatch is the yearly New Year's Day hatch - prizes and silliness to see who has the first chick of the year, etc - there's a big thread on it over in the hatching forum. I did it last year and my chicks didn't make it out until 5AM. Argh!

Eggs have to be set on December 11th at noon, I believe.
