NY chicken lover!!!!

I wasn't going to log in but then I read this. Now I've been married for a long time. ( married men live longer, ,,,, it only seems longer..

) But seriously this is for your husband. Dude no matter how long you live you will never do half the work your wife will. Even if she wasn't there you will never do as much as her. Sometimes when my DW is home and doing stuff I'm thinking. I don't know what motivates her to do that. Heck I'd buy paper plates and cups. I can never figure out how she manages to do the dishes and put them all away. I hate drying dishes. I'm retired and she still comes home and makes dinner. Sometimes she lets me make it. I used to eat those boil bag things. I'm not sure they even make them anymore. So dude buy her a truck if she wants it. Unless you have a bunch of kids. If a truck will cost the same as an SUV buy her the truck, just cuz she wants it. Me I'd settle for ...... nah I'd rather have a truck too. Right now I have a minivan. IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT. Me I'm so poor I can't even pay attention.
I think I just realized why married women tend to out live their husbands. It's Gods way of giving them a few years without having to pick up after someone.

Good morning all and welcome newbies (I'm a displaced upstate NYer from Ithaca so I'm tolerated here). Living on Long Island I need a 22 for the neighbors not the coons. Great photos everyone. My friend that I gave my Black copper marans to last summer has eggs that should start hatching on Fri. I can't wait. She said I can have a hen if she gets an extra. He is a beautiful creature. He is still healing from the fox attack on Monday. I picked up all the feathers he lost and plan to send them to my brother since he ties his own flies. Well out to take care of the girls (and 2 remaining boys) just can't believe I can't even give them away.

One last thing maybe I can get some suggestions . I need a new automobile. My husband wants me to get a SUV type thing. I WANT A TRUCK..... I've had two and now with owning chicks. I think I need another one.Last week when I went to Agway I had to tie the food to the roof racks since I had two bales of straw in the trunk. You should see what my VW beetle's tuunk looks like. Its 11 years old. It looks like a small feed store exploded in it. Most times its either his way or the highway. Sure do miss my dad ; if he was alive we'd go truck shopping. Can you buy a car with American Express? Wish me luck....Carol

Carol,

yes, at the right dealer you can buy a car with your American Express. My SO (ray) bought a car with his Credit card once. Was a used car, but it was over 6 grand. (Wish I had that much open to use on my Credit card....oh, wait, I'd spend it...not a good idea)

Second, you can get a truck for less than an SUV. And the newer trucks get better gas mileage than an SUV. AND you can hose out a truck, not adviseable with an SUV.

Have you looked at trucks? They make some really really nice ones. Maybe you can talk him into one with a "king cab" which is basically a SUV with a bed attatched.

The problem with many SUV's (and I have owned 4 of them in the past 10 years) is the weight limitations....Many SUV's are built on Car chassies....so you can't load them as heavy as a truck. Some of the smaller SUV's have car tires, again weight limitations....So a truck is what you want if you are going to haul 3- 5 hundred pounds at a time (like I want to, to save money by going to feed store instead of TSC for chicken food). Now if you are really loaded (and I mean rich) a Suburban is built on a truck frame, so you have all that indoor space that you can fill like a truck. (But they start at 40 grand and go UP in price)

Personally I would go with the truck, unless there were small children needing transport. And if he is saying SUV cuz it handles better than truck in bad weather, tell him...hold on buster, that's not really true....ask any SUV driver (w/o 4 wheel drive) how their vehicle handles in the snow...they'll tell you "exactly the same as a car"....and very few SUV's have "on demand" 4 wheel drive, so you lose gas mileage if you get 4WD SUV....better to get a truck with "on demand" 4WD and learn to lock the hubs yourself, if that is how you engage the 4 WD.

Carol---get a truck. I've used all kinds of vehicles over the years to haul stuff and a truck is the best way to go. I will say my old ford windstar was great for hauling stuff and man could I pack a lot of stuff in there! A family of five with the dog and camping gear for a week, a girl scout troop with camping gear and food for a week, enough wood and gardening supplies to redo my yard several times over, etc. etc. We have a truck that does everything we need and then some. Its a little one with jump seats in the back but it worked for me when I had to take the kids with me on a run to the hardware store or feed store. Cass is correct in telling you that suv's are built on a car frame. They cant handle as much as a truck. Even those socalled hummers are not built like real ones but are simply truck frames. You could probably find a reasonably priced used one right now. My daughters boyfriend just picked up a nice used ram for a descent price. It is a four door so room for others.

It seems I am doomed to having silkie hens that lay in the run. After all the fussing in the nest box with the golf balls, she laid an egg in the run. I will have to find a box to put in there and see if they use it and then try moving it slowly towards the coop. Patience is the word of the day! Let them out for a few yesterday and had a pair of perigrine falcons fly over looking for a free meal. I stayed close to the kids so the falcons left. I know they are living in the area so nobody freeranges without me out there. My big girls are too heavy for them. They are putting on weight finally and are looking good. Hoping to finish moving and splitting all the oak this weekend so we can get the supports on the coop and lay the flooring. I will take pics as we go so you can see it as we do it. Sooo excited.

Hope everyone is well. Rancher--we women are always busy, if not physically then mentally. Just something hardwired into us that we are always thinking about what has to be done next and when we are going to do it, etc. Hows your hatch coming? and the coops?

Today is day 7 of the newest incubator full of eggs. I will candle later. The broody is down to 4 green eggs. I took three of her first chicks. I also candled last night and took 6 of the 10 she had. Some clears and others not so sure. I don't need more chicks. The other hens get in there and lay another egg and at least this way I know which four to leave.

I got some work on the hoops but it rained yesterday and DD called said she was sick and I took the queen for the day after getting at least one floor done. It snowed last night and is supposed to snow again.

Sunday should be warmer and the beginning of the week. I have to get some more supplies so I may get them done next week. These poor birds need to go out. It's very frustrating.

I'm admittedly a bit jealous of all you folks so far away! I wish I was closer to share eggs/chicks with. I have fertile eggs from a good partridge rock roo over a really sweet barred rock hen, they'd hatch out black sex links... but no incubator and no broody!

I was going to order PR's from Paul Harter but he said this is the last year he'll be selling chicks due to lack of interest. I have Delaware chicks coming in April. My original 5 Delaware came from Alden , NY. I still have them of course.

I don't care what you say, I want DERP eggs! I have derp on my fridge as a magnet. :)

I just ran into a neighbor on my walk who has two SLW roosters that patrol his duck pen (and his front yard), but no hens. he was with another neighbor who wants chickens and may take some of my extra chickens - yay!

Don't worry Cass, the two blrw are still earmarked for you. =) I am hoping to get that coop cleared (and cleaned/repaired) within a month - the NYD hatch chicks are getting big and ornery in the barn =).

You live in Vernon, and I work in Oneida..... Hmmmm. If you let me know when you are going, and if you arestill willing to pick up, I might take you up on that offer.

Framac

Cydney83 wanted me to let you know that she wouldn't mind picking up the roo for you. She's just waiting to hear back from someone herself to know when she is heading out that way.
