NY chicken lover!!!!

How many more eggs are there to hatch?

I wouldn't open it until the last had hatched or 2.5 days had passed from the first hatch. Chicks can live for 3 days without food. Can you slip a little water in for them to drink? And is there enough air ciculation ....14 chicks plus the eggs need a lot of O2.

Ditto. I always wait the three days after the first chick hatches before I open the coop. If there are others still pipping then I grab the chicks that have hatched and close up the incu and wait. You will be pleasantly surprised to find a last bloomer. Last time it was day four and there she was. I've learned lots of things aren't written in stone. 21 days my foot!

vmdan- No that is not a hoop coop. It is the top of the gym at the school across the road.

If that were mine I wouldn't need to build any other coops. I'd divide it into two floors and then look out.

madsen - Yes I am making progress slowly. Lord have mercy was I hurting this morning. I haven't moved the snake yet. I am curious to see if they eat it. Poor thing. Can't figure out why it got stuck. I didn't notice it yesterday, though I don't go into the coop except to get the eggs they lay on the floor. Those dumb Doras just lay it where ever the feel like it.

night , night,

Rancher

Hey Rancher...doesnt that dead snake count as free chicken buffet? I am surprised your raptors werent all over it already!!! Sorry to hear about your arthritis. Looks like you are making progress on your coop though. We are starting the woods open air coop tomorrow.

Getting silkie eggs next week to go with the few mine have laid into the bator. Now I get to hatch some cheeps!!! So excited. Everyone gets to play outside tomorrow while we are building so that will make them very happy.

Stony...dont you know a watched pot never boils??? lol chick tv is hard to stop watching. Hope they all hatch!

Ginny--its not too early for the peepers. I have to hens that are great frog hunters and have learned where to look for them on the property. They are relentless and love to eat frogs!

I hope we get pictures when you are done! I was a bit worried hearing the peepers. I love when they start!!

There is now 16 hatched, and 9 left. Air vents are open. Still Air

I pull out what is hatched about every 6 hours. My incubator comes right back to temp and humidity. good luck!!

I am no expert, but I would leave them overnight, unless they seem to be in distress.....then I would take the 16 to the detrament of the 9 unhatched. The rest that are gonna hatch may be pipped or hatched by morning. Remember that you may not get 100% hatch rate, so you may have to make the choice between the ones who are already hatched vs the unpipped eggs which may never hatch. And if you only have 9 left unhatched you already have a wonderful hatch rate.

My sister has joined our ranks - she picked up what look like five amber-links and five red sexlinks at TSC today.

I had to upgrade my duck brooder, as they're growing like weeds. One 40-gallon rubber stock tank from TSC, and the little goofballs are back in business.

Just got back from band practice. chicks and pips still. i just can't count the little buggers. Day 21 was noontime. But the 1st 4 hatched sometime overnight. So I'm thinking late thursday I'll unload the chicks, and see what happens past that. My best hatches have been when I kept the bator closed for the near 3 days. Seems to work best for me anyway. Patience,.... ehhh. Not easy.

For any rock n roll fans, our band is playing at Jacksons Old Chatham house on St. patty's day. 8pm till midnight. i don't know how late they serve the corned beef and cabbage. but it is %18 all you can eat. Rumor has it, their CB&C is the best.

I went down to the coop to do a night check on the cheeps, and had to turf one of my Orps out of a nest box. She was acting like a broody-wannabe late last year, and evidently is going into mama mode again. I also found her hanging around in a nest box yesterday, and amused myself briefly by putting eggs next to her and watching her carefully tuck them under herself while chirping to them. I'll have to set up a spot for her and give her some mutt eggs to sit on, just to see if my roosters are actually competent.

I also found a ratchafratchin' deer mouse when I grabbed an old screen out of the storage/playroom side of the coop (duckie cover - it fits perfectly over their new and improved digs). The blasted thing was clinging to the screen and staring at me. Time to get a few traps.

We had thunder and lightning about a half-hour ago - love it!

Hope the staff of BYC is noticing the "Amen's" to my request to allow us to continue as we have been (at least for the year + that I have been a member)

Please, we need the locals to be allowed to post what they have....gas is sooo dear and shipping is so iffy....

We need more "Amens" (It's Sunday, that's why I chose that word, sorry if I offended any Agnostics or Athiests or Goddess worshippers, but "Amen" seemed appropriate today.

PS I think the staff at BYC does a wonderful job. Sincerely. But , well, see above....we are happy with our little "i have XYZ " posts on our local thread

Amen!

Anyone close to watertown? I am in the military and just came back from deployment. I am looking to start a small flock with my children. I am have a little troble finding chicks, other than the farm supply. I would like some BO's, sussex, RIW, silkies, or any breeds that are good with children. thanks
