NY chicken lover!!!!

Where in Syracuse are you? I can help if you'd like. PM me if you're not to far. Otherwise pics of your project would help. Remember hens say, "Never give up, Never surrender".
I live out in the sticks in Tully. It's built, it's finally up on four legs and pretty much done. Just some finishing touches, paint, stain and it should be good to go. Not as sturdy as I'd like it to be but I can always keep working on it and add to support to it. I still have another week before I add two more silkies and take my white hen from the group and move them all to this coop. The only I need to do is either buy something or make a nest box. I wanted one or two of them to hang off the side of the coop but I just didn't want to screw it up, so I think I'm going to make corner box to place inside the coop. What's the smallest a nest box can be? I don't want to make it too small where the hens won't lay in it but don't want to make it so big it takes up so much space inside the coop.

Wow...busy place. I wont be on for a bit. August has been a horrible month. First the accident my dh had and now my father passed away quite suddenly yesterday afternoon. I hate funerals, planning funerals and this whole business. I miss him terribly. Thanks for letting me share.
Sorry for your loss, thoughts and prayers for you and your family.

Pharmchickrnmom, what a difficult time you are having. It is a time to get through, dont forget to take time for you, to just be or do whatever you need. Sending positive energy your way.

On chicken stuff, saw the rabbits and chickens at the Fair. Why do people make silkies look like cotton candy? And why don't they make it a requirement that the chickens breed is noted? I would like to learn more about the different breeds...But on a disturbing note, in one cage there were three, a rooster and two hens, and one of the hens was being pecked. The look in her eyes was so defeated, she was giving up. We saw a man who was giving some birds water, so I brought him down and showed him and he got someone to take care of the problem. The hen was bleeding by then...but a bit later the man thanked me and said they got her out. Poor thing.

Heh, I have one of almost everything, that's why if you get eggs from me they are mutts! But I just like to have variety!! ;)

Oh, and I have always loved my leghorns - my last batch were the sweetest ladies and followed me everywhere. I found them a nice retirement home when I had too much predation a while back. =(

:) I'm with you! I like having all sorts of colors and varieties of chickens roaming the yard! The last time I let a broody hen hatch out her eggs I had 2 roosters and 8 different breeds of hens so when they hatched you never know what your gonna get. The next 3 weeks were like watching an episode of Maury Povich trying to figure out which baby was who's! :D

here's mine. I attached it to the side and cut holes in the side wall of the coop. This one has three holes. Just cut a round hole for each box. There are dividers inside.

hi im near the buffalo area, anyone around to swap, sell, any idea about chickens?!?~?~ im an addict

Well if you come this way, stop in if you want chicks. Three more in the last two days.

What ever you get, I'd do some research and make sure you have plenty of room. I've got a guy right now who gave me a down payment but has yet to come and get them nor does he have a coop set up yet.

Some folks get the cart before the horse. Don't worry there will be plenty of chickens to choose from when your ready I have no doubt.

Funny little buggers. There are three hens on eggs in the half hoop. One hatched three and got off, so I gave her three final eggs to another in the coop. Then this afternoon the mom got up and jumped out of the coop so her babies ran and hid under one of the other hens. She didn't seem the least bit fazed to have three little furballs join her.

Thats what I was planning on building but with only 1 hole since there will only be 2 hens in this coop.

I suggest two holes and nests. One may go broody or they may lay at the same time. It's easier to "unuse" a nest box than add one if you need to.
