NY Gay Pride Weekend

Really sorry to hijack the thread! I think it's important for gay farmers to know that they aren't alone out there.

I'm thinking of moving to Central NY, but being from KY and NH, I've thought of those places too. I don't care if you like gays, or agree with them, I'm just looking for a place where people won't burn my barn down (which happens).

I think sexuality is about the least interesting thing about most gay people, yet some folks just can't stop obsessing about it!

Central ohio is actually good - as Columbus is quite large - 13th biggest city in the country and you can be in the country in 15 minutes max - people are liberal for the most part here .

Ooooh, have fun...NY has a lot to celebrate now, with the passing of legalized gay marriage...this parade should be a doozy!

My two best friends are a gay couple who are unable to marry in our homestate of Maine. They were going to do so in New Hampshire but are now considering the Big Apple.

There I go painting with a broad brush again.

Here in Kiowa people tend to be very narrow minded. If a boy came out in school he would get beat up. I love our property and my 2 closest neighbors. They just happen to have views very close to mine. I'm sure there are other good ones out there. Just haven't met them yet. So for you rural dwellers that have some open minded people around you. Enjoy.

No no no, I think I may have expressed myself wrongly there. My friends are just more open, and I agree with the statements above completely. Sorry if I offended you

Oh heavens no, absolutely no offense taken. Very good topic.

I hear the Amish are cool with it.

Good luck on that one. Most rural areas are about 80% hard core conservative. I'd try the east or west coast rural communities.

Hm, I don't know if the Amish are united as a group, 'cool' about it or not. I'm not sure if there is a general consensus on that issue, among all the Amish communities. After more years of living in the Amish area, I've come to the conclusion that the Amish aren't that different from the English. They have their good people and their not so good people. I do have a fair idea of what most of the Amish churches want people to TRY and be, though.

In general, though, the Amish seem to be very outwardly polite and tolerant. 'Live and let live'. I'm not sure if that really means that all, many, a lot or few Amish people would actually think privately, that it's a good thing. But I think in general, the Anabaptists faiths do not feel it is up to them to pronounce a judgement on, or actually participate in any mistreatment of, any group or individual.

I'm not really sure thiough, if I'd suggest assuming tolerance, well, in any group.

In the old days, I think it was almost assumed, that gay people would keep an extremely low profile in rural areas, and be very careful before they let anyone know. And I'm not at all sure that's because of concerns about how most of the Amish community would react....

Once I was talking to an amish friend, I asked him what work he was up to lately.

He absulutely surprised me by leaning over his office desk and saying in a very dramatic and low whisper, 'I've been doing some work for a man who is.....jewish', this last in a very, very quiet whisper.

I decided to take the bull by the horns - 'Oh, where I came up, was about 50-50 Christian and Jewish. I sure don't mind if someone is Jewish. Love the food and the holidays, I've even gone to temple with friends sometimes, it's very nice'.

He smiled and seemed to relax. I have no idea what he was actually thinking on that subject....not EVEN sure if I WANT to know, LOL.

The bottom line is that rural, urban, straight, gay, you just can't tell these days what an individual is going to think, or how they are going to react.

The best thing I can think of to do, is just be careful, and be open with people who earn it, after getting to know them a little. EVEN these days, when things are just - oh light years from where they used to be.

We used to have an absolutely rabid anti gay older spinster lady on our street. All it took was for her favorite sister's son to announce he was gay. 'Those folks are ALRIGHT IN MY BOOK!'

Even an old dog can learn new tricks!

oohhh yeah. Here in the south, it gets hot but you can let your animals graze about ten months out of the year without having to supplemental them, on good pasture land. Love the long growing season. If done right you can get three harvests of corn too

THREE harvest of corn??? Whoa, we can only do with ONE! Or two if we plant them a bit later for eating sweet corn but have to hope for no freezing weather! Unless you like those mini corn things for your stir fry dinners!

LOL on the KKK, they are nasty bunch of people. Enuff said about them!
