I hear the Amish are cool with it.
Good luck on that one. Most rural areas are about 80% hard core conservative. I'd try the east or west coast rural communities.
Hm, I don't know if the Amish are united as a group, 'cool' about it or not. I'm not sure if there is a general consensus on that issue, among all the Amish communities. After more years of living in the Amish area, I've come to the conclusion that the Amish aren't that different from the English. They have their good people and their not so good people. I do have a fair idea of what most of the Amish churches want people to TRY and be, though.
In general, though, the Amish seem to be very outwardly polite and tolerant. 'Live and let live'. I'm not sure if that really means that all, many, a lot or few Amish people would actually think privately, that it's a good thing. But I think in general, the Anabaptists faiths do not feel it is up to them to pronounce a judgement on, or actually participate in any mistreatment of, any group or individual.
I'm not really sure thiough, if I'd suggest assuming tolerance, well, in any group.
In the old days, I think it was almost assumed, that gay people would keep an extremely low profile in rural areas, and be very careful before they let anyone know. And I'm not at all sure that's because of concerns about how most of the Amish community would react....
Once I was talking to an amish friend, I asked him what work he was up to lately.
He absulutely surprised me by leaning over his office desk and saying in a very dramatic and low whisper, 'I've been doing some work for a man who is.....jewish', this last in a very, very quiet whisper.
I decided to take the bull by the horns - 'Oh, where I came up, was about 50-50 Christian and Jewish. I sure don't mind if someone is Jewish. Love the food and the holidays, I've even gone to temple with friends sometimes, it's very nice'.
He smiled and seemed to relax. I have no idea what he was actually thinking on that subject....not EVEN sure if I WANT to know, LOL.
The bottom line is that rural, urban, straight, gay, you just can't tell these days what an individual is going to think, or how they are going to react.
The best thing I can think of to do, is just be careful, and be open with people who earn it, after getting to know them a little. EVEN these days, when things are just - oh light years from where they used to be.
We used to have an absolutely rabid anti gay older spinster lady on our street. All it took was for her favorite sister's son to announce he was gay. 'Those folks are ALRIGHT IN MY BOOK!'
