Hi,

Our 5-yr old Ameraucana has had sour crop for some time now. We have tried massaging her crop, emptying her and keeping her put up, but she just goes back out & tanks back up again. It's so bad that the feathers have rubbed off of the bottom of her belly and it's getting sore. We have been told that this is caused by yeast and that we can give her Nystatin, but we have to have a prescription.

The question is, can we give her the subject cream, which is what we have on hand? If so, how much? She weighs about 4 pounds and is the sweetest, spoiledest girl ever!

Do you live in the USA? If so, you can buy Nystatin OTC from a pigeon supply website. Just google "Medistatin"

Keep in mind that sour crop is usually caused by something else and sometimes the crop has bacteria *and* yeast.

Has your hen been de-wormed? If not, you might want to try that too.

Thanks for the info. Yes, we dewormed her & the others within the last 10 days. Our vet gave us an prescription for Nystatin, but we will remember this if we ever need it again. We gave her the prescription for about 6 days but our sweet girl continued to get worse so we took her to another vet who said that he could flush her crop out, but the problem would only return & the only fix was surgery. We love this girl dearly so we agreed but sadly, she died as they were closing her up. We knew it was a big risk with her being 5-yrs old & her health but at least we know that she is no longer suffering. As it turned out, the vet said that she had a growth in her crop that prevented her food from getting into her digestive tract properly and that is what probably caused this and that she probably had it from birth. I can tell you that she had eating problems when she was a newly hatched chick & was had fed & that's how the love story began. This picture was taken just a few days ago. Hopefully this will help someone else.
