I do not feel threatened by having my children hear things out of line with my beliefs. If you explain why you feel the way you do & discuss things with your kids, at least they understand your perspective. Think of it this way: If your kids hear the arguments of "the other side", they can develop counter-arguments. I cannot tell you the number of college-aged people I have met that get red-faced and stammer "my dad told me..." during a political discussion. You cannot lock your kids in the closet and expect them to be informed ambassadores to "the cause", whatever it is.

I think listening to a presidentail address at school is as close to learning about politics as most kids will get. Parents sometimes do not care to inform their kids; watch the news or read a paper. Heaven forbid the family misses American Idol. We always watch the State of the Union. When Bush was in office, it gave me the opportunity to reinforce that it is wrong to make fun of people...

wow I am confused he plans to address the children in our schools, frankly I think it is about time some important people pay some attention to our youth, I doubt he will do anything but a pep talk and frankly after watching our schools change for the worse I don't think it could be a bad thing.

BTW the law is no religion in public schools, not no government the public schools, they are PART of the government.

Gotta remember, EVERYONE has their own opinions, even school kids. Not sure what would be considered 'old enough' but let them listen and make their own opinions. Let them judge for themselves on what they want to believe in regardless of what Mom and Dad thinks. We all want what is best for our kids so lets support them (kids) on their own thinking and trust it will be a good one.

From what was quoted in our newspaper this morning, the message will include celebrities asking children to, among other things, "be of service to Barak Obama". I have no problem with the rest of it, and I have absolutely no problem with my child being taught to honor and respect the government of the US and the office of president, but I don't like him being asked to support Barak Obama in particular. And not by celebrities--too manipulative. Pledging to uphold a particular person sounds a little like what dictatorships do.

Depending on what he is planning on saying would be the difference to me. I haven't heard anything about it yet so I can't make a decision but pretty much anything Obama has to say makes my head hurt.......those poor kids....

In case no one has already responded, here's an answer for those of you who were wondering when President Obama's address to the school kids will be - this is from the Dept. of Education's website:

"At 12:00 p.m., Eastern Time (ET), September 8, 2009, President Barack Obama will deliver a national address to the students of America."
