October Hatch-A-Long 2017

I think my Roos are still too young. I've seen a couple fertile eggs but who knows. I am just going to call it quits on this batch and buy some fertile eggs.
Wait for another response first. I'm just an amateur. Don't turn it off just yet. Do you have any that have a dark blob in the middle?
The first thing I would do is go and break open a new egg from that pen. Separate the yolk like you're going to make an omelet, and take a good look at the yolk. Look for a clear 'bullseye'. This should be a good indicator of roo action.

Also an amateur, but it looks clear to me, too. I haven’t seen marks, if you can call it that, they resemble stained glass to me, all over the egg like that on anything other than eggs that didn’t hatch.

I am so excited that everyone's eggs are developing so nicely!! I don't think mine are going to make it. I still don't see much happening in them :( I am thinking my humidity might have been too high. I read some that say 25-35 and some say 45-50 and some say 50-60. So I've been running it in the 50-60 range and I think it was too high. :he
I center my acceptable humidity around 50. I take action and add more water when it falls below 45. If it happens to go to high, which only happens when I add water, I don’t generally worry about it. It doesn’t stay high for long and the only convenient way to lower it is let it go down by itself. For lockdown, I fill the water but also add small pieces of soaked sponge to get it up above 60. I toss in as many as it takes. I don’t bother to remove any, it’s not worth disrupting lockdown, but I will slip the cover open just enough to add more sponges, usually one every couple hours to see if that gets the humidity to where it needs to be. With my first hatch, I learned patience is needed to regulate humidity. It won’t jump up and down quickly like temperature.

Hi all! Can I join late? I'll be setting eggs later this week when they arrive. My current flock of 8 birds is about 4 y.o., molting, and their egg production last year was way down, so I figured it's time to replenish/replace the flock before they snarf winter feed.

A rainbow of blue layer eggs arriving: SBEL's, Sapphires, Cuckoo Bluebars, and then a couple of a friend's Welsummer eggs will go into the incubators and possibly some TJ's to offset all the blues.

Shipped eggs are tricky at best and the ABQ postal service has a HUGE parcel drop, so shipped eggs don't fare well. I'm hopeful to get 3 chicks of each and then keep the pullets. I asked one shipper to put "Fragile - Hatching Eggs" on the box, but she said they fare better if you put "Contents - Honey" as the USPS doesn't want a sticky mess. Brilliant!

I'd love to hatch out some Marans, but we're high altitude (5000 ft) and shipped Marans eggs are dismal viability as the coating and pore size tends to smother the chicks or they're born oxygen-deprived and, well, handicapped.

I hope there's some in this group that are late hatchers, too!
Happy October 1st and fortuitous hatching to all!

Sure you can join. They're hatching this month, aren't they?

Update: one chick, two pips!

I’m with you in late October! My eggs should be here, also by post, by Friday. I also have a small existing flock I’m adding to. I chose an assortment, so not sure what I’ll get, but I’m itching to find out! My current six are EE and Ancona mixes.

I’m getting so impatient for mine. I’ve been hearing a couple peeps so I’m hoping for external pips soon. So far just sitting cozy. :)
