October Hatch-a-long!

Also, go with your gut, if you have a bad feeling you might need to assist pipping and hatching. Read Sally Sunshine's articles on assisted hatching. Read them over and over. The best advice I can give is go with your gut, because more than likely people will tell you from their experience and I've seen others follow their advice and the chick died. This is from MY experience; FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION!

there can be hatches up to day 25. I was in the July hatch-a-long someone mentioned they stopped incubating at day 25 and forgot about the egg in the incubator and heard some peeping a couple days later. Sure enough, a chick hatched day 27! It is rare but anything can happen. What I would do is candle them and check for an internal pip. If you can't candle them sometimes you can tap on the egg and you'll hear it peeping from the inside. Sometimes you don't have to take them out, you can make peeping noises and you can see them rocking.

Thanks for the advice. Goin to candle now!

Whenever I help chicks, I chip a hole in the shell that's about the size off a q-tip head. Then I take a q-tip dipped in water and roll it over the membrane. If I can see blood vessels, I leave it alone. If the membrane is a dull yellowish color, I know it's probably safe to help.
I've had several chicks that somehow managed to get their heads in a position that made it impossible for them to hatch on their own, and enough of them have been like this that I get kind of paranoid about it and start candling once a day or so when they're supposed to be in lockdown. I live next to a large body of water, so I don't have to worry about humidity escaping as much when I candle.

They started hatching!! now I need food and don't have chick starter, can I grind up some wheat berries and quinoa grains? I don't have oatmeal either. Will have to do to the feed store I hope they have chick starter at this time of year!

Thought all were lost. The chicken eggs I got from our egg person turned out to be those that "might" have been in the fridge, so most had eggs with no embryos at all, plus the turkey eggs ended up not fertile as well. I ended up with only two that looked "promising", and of those two, one sported a blood ring last week and stopped developing. But lo and behold, the one remaining egg is pipping (and very vocal) right now. Not counting my chick before it completely hatches, but if it does, what am I going to do with one little lone chick????

When it hatches you could try putting a feather duster in the brooder as a "mommy", other than that I think you may end up with a house chicken on your hands.

I have the same problem so I put a mior in the brooder along with a stuffed animal in trying to find other ideas too
