October Hatch-a-long!

So glad I have more than one thermometer in the incubator. The digital one is slow to update it's temperature. The old fashioned ones are so much accurate!

day 9 here! Has anyone candled their eggs? Mine were to dark to see much & I didn't try real hard. But temperature and turning has been steady so we should be good. Anyone have any tricks for candling dark eggs?

I've read day 14 to candle dark eggs, you should see some veins and growth. How many lumens is your light? more lumens the better. Dark eggs are such a pain to candle, I usually just do the sniff test and monitor the air cell

Glad you have the other thermometer in there too! Thankfully eggs take awhile to change temps inside themselves so their temp is much more stable than the incubator :)

Tried to candled the eggs today, but most have rather dark shells and it's hard to tell, so I still don't know how many are viable...

However it did look like there might be veins in 5 of them, and out of those five, there were two that each had a spot with a lot of veins. But then, those two had light colored shells, so they were pretty easy to see.

To the best of my knowledge, which is very limited, an egg that is not viable will start to smell because it is rotting. If someone else knows more, please correct me!

Pretty much it. If it starts to smell, sometimes even ooze, toss that sucker... carefully that is. Have you ever had one pop?! bleghhh the worst smell ever. I've had a couple that weren't quite oozing, but they were smelling. When they "oozed" it was more like crystalized egg whites forming on the shell. Seemed like the ones touching it went bad too. I had so much luck with my first hatch luckily I didn't have to deal with all of that until my 2nd hatch.
