October Hatch-A-Long

The Little Farm, a fantastic teaching farm in Miami, will take our chickies once they're big enough to live on a farm. I'm so excited!!

That is exciting & nice to have a plan for the chicks home once they are feathered out.

I let my hens roam the backyard for a few hours each day. I put them back in the run & could hear a hen in the garden somewhere kicking up a fuss, but all my hens (excluding the broody who I assumed was dutifully sitting) were accounted for. It turns out that Snowy decided she wanted to graze for a bit today & went out.

I'm not sure how long she was off the nest for, but I whipped her back on & she seemed happy to go back on the eggs.
I sent my son off on pooper shooter duties (hosing all the poops into the lawn while they are soft) & he found the broody poop which was nearly as big as a tennis ball according to him. Lol. Now he wants to play tennis in the garage.

Mine are due on the 5th! I can't believe it's so close. I cheated and candled last night (just a couple), and I saw wiggling!

I wanted to make a hatcher, but it's coming up fast, and I don't think I have enough time and wherewithall to do it ... I do have a cooler. I bought a cheap picture frame for the glass. I can easily buy a lamp, but I don't think I can figure out the fan thing this quick ... the Hovabator seems so smallo and low head room ...

Candled my eggs yesterday....I can't believe lockdown is in a few days!!! AHHHH! Anyway.....I am now down to 6 EE, 6 Ameraucanas, 1 Dorking and 1 Isbar mix. Started with 10 EE and 12 Ameraucanas plus the one dorking and one Isbar. I'll be happy if even one hatches!

Lockdown is Tuesday. Hatch hatch day is the 3rd! Getting closer! I candled lastnight and bother eggs still have live chicks so I am hopeful that they both will hatch but only time will tell :)

Lockdown is the first, so far both eggs are looking ok. I hope they both make it so nobody's lonesome! My other batch will be going in to lockdown on the 13th, that would be a lot of waiting for a friend, and who knows if I could even mix them at that point. Serama chick sizes depend on the egg size and my second batch do have noticeably larger eggs (several are probably c size birds in the making) so I couldn't say for sure. Super excited!!

I hope those of you approaching lockdown have safe and easy hatches!

Hi everyone! Well I wasn't going to be hatching anytime soon since I really need to wait and get more coops/runs to make room, but my hubby decided otherwise...lol We went to an auction to sell a rooster and he bought a dozen fertilized rhode island red eggs! And he hates the chickens, go figure :) Anyways, I just put them in the bator. I have no idea how they will be but kinda excited since they are not shipped eggs. I also decided to put one of my silver wyandotte eggs in just to see if by any chance they are fertile yet. The rooster will either be a EE that I sold a couple weeks ago or my new young rooster which is a new hampshire red. Either way just testing to see if it progresses. I have noticed some of my eggs are fertile when I make breakfast and the wyandottes seem to be the roosters favorite! Hoping I do better on my third hatch now but since not planned I havn't bought stuff that I wanted to before hatching again. I'm going to be doing a dry hatch and not adding any water and very little at lockdown. I think after reading some of these post that my room humidity is plenty high enough plus our Florida weather right now is very high humidity. Good luck to all and happy hatching. Will update in 7 days!!!

Many people use their still air styrofoams just for hatching. My last hatch, I turned the fan off during hatching... I had some tiny little birds and it helped them not get stuck to their shells!

I am jealous, I wish someone would get me eggs!! Although, last night, my son was asking me if I wanted to talk about eggs or incubators or seeds... I guess he was desperate for conversation?!
