October Hatch-A-Long

We have two babies! One still hatching and one that pipped the side and I think hit a vein :( lots of blood and no more movement. But these two are looking good and strong so far!

Silkies and top hats are the only chickens I can't bring myself to have. I'm afraid they won't see the bald eagles that live in a tree nearby.
I really want some more broodies... they are really the best way to hatch my Serama eggs and ducklings are so much easier to have broody raised! Of course I don't know if I have any girls yet... so I should probably hatch some more just to make sure! If that means I have a whole other breed...

I keep building coops around the garden and then I take turns letting them out so they can run around and eat bugs and weeds. My duck with her babies is in the garden these days. It is so cute to have the mamas with their babies in there together!

As long as it doesn't stink and isn't oozing I leave it in just in case. I've thrown out good eggs before... My daughter wants the "good egg/bad egg" meter off willy wonka to check our eggs! Lol

Thanks! I've only hatched once before and I did that, then. Heartbreaking when you open one to find a live chick. Looking forward to the hatch!

I was worried about humidity here in the Seattle area, so I put my incubator in a humid basement bedroom and no water inside. Didn't add water at day 18 either. All the chicks that made it to day 10 without quitting hatched. I'm waiting on the last one today. I am sorry so many of yours didn't make it.

Thanks!   I have two little Seramas and two Silkies are doing okay, so all in all, not terrible... I just feel bad about those little Seramas and wish I had dry incubated this time!    Humidity was too high for the Silkies also but I managed to save a couple... one actually had his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and was pretty backwards in the shell but is looking okay this morning... we'll see!   Sometimes I think the moisture we have here in the Northwest is double strength and not like anywhere else.   I took all water out of the bator when I put my duck eggs in last week, hopefully in time for my Seramas that will hatch next week!

Thanks : ) I'm glad your babies hatched!! I was wondering how hatching would go in the nw as weather gets wetter! If I keep my vents open it stays pretty dry in the bator.

I have been trying to hatch Seramas all Summer and I have hatched quite a few... but I have yet to get it just right and have to assist many of them! I though maybe a little more humidity might help but apparently not! My hatch didn't turn out too badly though... two Seramas and two Silkies and they are adorable!

My three Seramas that will hatch next week have pretty small air cells so we'll see. They are from my own hen so I won't be crushed if they don't make it.
