October Hatch-A-Long

Got them in...Total eggs, 9 Buff Orpington/Blue Orpingtons and 19 EE eggs... May add a couple more of the EE eggs tomorrow morning when they lay If I catch my buffs like I did today and yesterday I may add a few more of them too... I mean really... Can you ever have to many??

Mine are in at last so day one and due 11th October (10th in the USA). 9 under my broody and two that didn't fit in a make shift incubator in my hermit crab tank. It was that or the bin so they can only not develop. At day 8 ill candle and if any good replace any bad ones under the hen. Not sure what I will do if they are all alive at 8 days but think that's unlikely being shipped eggs and me having no idea what I'm doing ;-)

Thank you for all of that information. I'm keeping them in the incubator still on an automatic turner so we shall see. I'm also getting some more eggs sunday to add to it

Just did the 7 day candle. Two alive, one blood ring, and an astounding 6 clears. I broke all 7 and couldn't find a blastula on any of the clear! What incredibly bad luck with fertility, these were not inexpensive eggs either.. I really hope if any hatch, it's both. I'll do my absolute best for a lone chick but would still prefer them to have a friend!

Is anyone else's broody getting picked on? My broody hen was out dust bathing today and my other hen bit her comb, then the next time she tried to dust bathe she pecked viciously at her neck..... I haven't seen this before with my two hens though the broody one is not at the top of the pecking order. Any advice?

Yes my broody gets picked on too. I decided it was because instead of sitting quietly at the bottom of the pecking order where she belongs she shows aggressive mannerisms by puffing up and growling when the others are around. Behaviour way above her station and easily seen as challenging so she gets pecked. As soon as she stops being broody the pecking seems to settle down again.

Hi, I am hoping to join you also. I am setting up my incubator tonight and then will add the eggs either tomorrow night or the ay after. This will be my first hatch so fingers crossed it is successful. Wondering though, would you leave it to run tomorrow night just to be sure it doesnt lose too much heat overnight (it shouldnt as it hasnt been too cold) and if it does loose heat (as in a few degrees C) will that kill the chicks or delay hatch?

I am hoping to join this hatchalong too. Also a first timer with my first broody hen, Snowy, who is a leghorn cross & is very keen to be a mum. I switched her eggs with fertile ones late this afternoon & hope that she is happy with them. I can't wait for tomorrow to find out how she took to them!

Assuming all goes well, I wasn't planning on candling my eggs. I've heard that broodies know which ones are not developing & was hoping to leave it up to Snowy to kick out any quitters before they explode. Does that sound like a good plan or do some hens not do this?

I've read too many threads about exploding rotten eggs under broodies to trust my first time broody. But like you I've no idea what I'm looking for so sort of dreading facing it.
