October-hatch-along 2019

Big update: 1) We won Purinas Miss Fancy Feathers contest! Next round we are entered in to Miss Flocktober. If we win we get a years supply of chicken feed that we will donate to local rescues.
2) Floof and Frosty, my white Silkies who hatched last weekend are doing great under their buff Silkie mama named Tiny!
3) I candeled only one egg from the next clutch so far and it’s looking good! Today is about day 5, so I’ll do them all tonight. ❤️

So I cannot find a good source of information about temperature for chicks at different age. I know week 1 -33C, then reduce by 1 degree each week. But I have 8-days old chicks that are happy outside now and it is 22C during the day (I bring them inside the brooder at night), so with winter approaching and waiting for another 3 hatches in the incubator I would like to know better..

I dont put any care into having the brooder at a certain temp necessarily, but I just throw a heat lamp in there, and they decide whether to go directly under it, or what they want to do. You dont have to have a perfect temp in the brooder, just be sure they can get warmth if need be.

By the way, this is the first time I have incubated chicks to a broody mom after hatching. Just wondering if you have to watch out for pasty butt when not under a heat lamp?

Also, the CRAZIEST, I mean ABSOLUTELY CRAZIEST thing happened the other day! I went to check on the chicks. I drop some crumbles so mom makes noise. The chicks usually come out and eat the food. One wasn’t coming out from under her but I could hear it peeping loudly. I finally lifted her chest and the chick was STUCK TO HER, literally dangling from her chest! They are both Silkies and it was almost as if mom and baby had tangled together. It was like a knot of hair!!! It took forever but I finally separated them and days later baby is still fine. It was like a knot you might find behind a dogs ear. Anyone have Silkies ever see that?!?!

I tossed all of the Silkie eggs from the incubator tonight. No luck with this shipped batch. 4 were cracked and began to smell. One started to develop long before shipped, and didn’t make it. And the others didn’t develop.

The shipping box was beat up when I got it. However, had the eggs been double boxed, it might not have been as much of a problem. I have not had any luck with eggs not double boxed.

No more hatches planned until spring.
Yikes who did you buy from?

I candled my eggs that go into lockdown on Monday. And I have 2 shipped CCLBs, 4 shipped Cochins, 2 shipped seramas, and 5 of my own seramas. Interesting story about my serama eggs though. So we had a broody serama, and she was trying to lay on like at least 25 eggs, and she would be off of the nest for hours, so my friend (they're his, but he lives on our farm) he was just gonna throw all of the eggs bc he didn't believe there was any way that they were developing, so I snuck over there and stole like 10 or 12, and candled those, and we had 5 with development, and I just went on a road trip, got back on Thursday, and when I got back, there was a serama chick sitting in one of the holes of the egg turner. SO I am not sure when those seramas will hatch, but the shipped eggs, are due next Thursday.

So far I have hatched are:
1 Cuckoo Marans,
2 Isabell Cuckoo English Orps,
5 Lavender English Orps..possibly 6 because the last one came out and hes not dry yet..he flipped the top of the egg where I had written the breed. Soon as I can take them out of the incubator, I will look.
Also: 1 Chocolate Cuckoo English Orp is half hatched lol. Im really hoping more Choc Cuckoos hatch :fl

Considering most eggs never developed I am happy with what I have so far. I really hate shipped egg:he If you figure the cost of each chick (up to $20 or more) on some of the fancier breeds and how much overnight shipping costs plus some charge you for the box they ship them in...I guess I did okay..thats what I keep telling myself haha:idunno

None of the Gold Laced English Orps have hatched, most all were totally clear..one was iffy so I just stuck that one and another one in the hatcher. The cuckoo marans was a extra that seller threw in and it hatched the day after I put it in the hatcher. Very strange! I think it had to be partially developed when it was sent. Its a huge chick with long down.
