October Hatching ... How many are in? I'm due to hatch on 10/17

Well, *sigh* I guess I'm gonna give some away (hopefully all the roos) and a few of the pullets. The rest are additions to my flock. Nobody will get eaten.

Too funny

I wish I had the room to keep on hatching and hatching without running out of room. I just started with the hatching addiction but notice I said addiction as I am already hooked.

Hey Rita, that's great news about your eggs!!!! I know this time around will be better.

I'm psyched for you.

Well, I may as well tell the truth about me and my chickens......I keep all pullets for egg-laying, I've only kept one roo, because he took so much after Columbo. He'll stay with my mixed flock. But we've processed all other roos. However, if I get the silkies to hatch, I won't be processing the roos. Sometimes it's hard not getting attached to the roos, but I just have to be standoffish with them. My pullets, on the other hand...I spoil them rotten. Four of the first ones I hatched out will actually follow me around, and if I squat down, these girls come up just like puppies wanting to be petted. So I guess I have them for all kinds of reasons-----some are pets, but lay good eggs that I eat, or hatch, some just lay eggs for me to eat and hatch, and well, some (the roos) just get eaten. All of my quail get eaten if they don't become an addition to the breeding pen.

My last eggs are due to hatch on 10/14. I'm stopping until spring. I put my first eggs in the bator on 1/23, I have put in 988 eggs to hatch, & so far have hatched 856, not counting the after-hatch culls. Time for a break until spring after this last hatch. WHEW! I supply only 2 buyers for all of the chicks! Life is good! Hatch #41 is almost done!!!

I wish I lived out in the country and could just keep hatching and keeping the girls. Don't mind getting rid of the roosters though because I have no real intereast in keeping those. But I can see already with the few chicks I have in my first hatch how cute they are. They are so soft and small now, it's hard for me to imagine them as adults. They should turn out really tame though as they are inside and not going to be put out when its cold. I pick them up and hold them all the time.

I was just curios what you all did with the ones you hatch. I know I plan on making an incubator and brooder this winter and trying it come close to spring time. I do plan on eating some of mine but I have a friend who is wanting to set up a chicken Coop come next spring so I may see if she wants some then.

I got my chickens mostly for eggs but I also got ones that I was told were good for meat hens too because I do want to raise some chicks to go in the freezer next year, which meens I may have to build another coop lol. But my ladies I have now are just for eggs, No plans on butchering them, and I dont really want to keep any of the offspring for a while because I dont want them breeding with there dad, thats just wrong lol.

Something else that just hit me, I guess I could build a seperate coop and have my meat hens in there and keep my egg layers sperate that way there would be no interbreeding.....hmm now my I have thoughts running through my mind, the wife might not be to happy if I start building another coop lol I may have to split the camper into 2 rooms with a devider wall and put a hole and outside run on the other side.......hmmm lol. If I do do that though it would be next spring. Guess Im ganna have to start checking Craigslist for free fencing again lol.

Second pipped egg!

Congrats!!!!

I locked down this morning. Hatch day is Thursday 10/14. I ended up with 4 Crele OEGB and 3 Bantam BBS Cochins at lockdown.

I spent the weekend ordering more eggs to put in next weekend.

Two different orders of BLRW and 6 Lavender bantam cochin eggs should be on their way soon! We may add a few of our own BLRW and more Crele OEGB's too.
