This appears to have happened "overnight" - maybe it took a couple of days, but very rapid molt compared to any of our others that have molted. My kid put her in a towel to bring to me to take pics and there were feathers just coming off. She has BluKote on her causing the purple color. Not sure why the kid sprayed her with BluKote, bc she is not injured (but a kid + can of BluKote spray usually means they gotta spray it )


Maybe she will loose more? I'll post updated pics if her look is more "naked" in a few days. IDK, but glad it isn't too cold yet! All pics of same chicken. Chicken is a late April 2019 hatch, so not quite 18 months old. GLW.

3 Days later - This girl is an OVER-Achiever. Look at those pin-feathers. I'm thinking she's a bit itchy. And look at those pin feathers on the inside of the wing - now that looks like itchiness compounded!

Do you mean them or the feathers? You wouldn't know they are molting yet, they all look normal still, and I'm holding out for a good one of Flag (EE)

Oh boy, I am soooo not looking forward to this! I got my girls this year, so I don't think they'll molt until next year.

I went out to check waterers last night and about had heart-failure. The floor of my 7x9 main coop was completely covered with feathers that were NOT there the day before. A few, yeah, but not to this drastic level! I searched all over for a body so I could figure out what had gotten into the coop, but found none. Then I counted beaks - and all were there. That's when I noticed the big bald spots on the JG and NHR hens, and the shaggy look of everyone else. I have two Nankin roosters in there, too, but it took time to find them. Without tail feathers, The Boys look just like the older hens!
With everyone accounted for, I went back inside to make up a protein/multivitamin mix for the whole crew ... and a glass of wine for myself, to recover from the shock!

I SO understand! Two years ago, our RC Nankin rooster took Best in Show at the County Fair. We were VERY excited and planned to take him and several of his flock brothers to the State Fair, a month later. They must have overheard our plans, because right before State, they started to molt. By the time the Fair rolled around, we had six roosters ... and one ... count 'em - ONE ... tail feather between them. We only took a few hens to State, that year.
... SIGH ...
To his credit, the BIS rooster was the bearer of our single tail feather, and it was even a sickle. At least he tried!

not as bad as some others on here, but she is usually so sleek and looks so indignant at her transformation that i can't stop laughing every time i see her

overall fine. Spent a bit extra time in the coop, and we’ve noticed a few pin feathers have been picked. But, she’s moving around and behaving as a typical chicken Overall. We feed a 20% all flock, so she has enough protein available.
