We just had our first snow, and my RIR hen decided it was a good idea to molt. I hadn't seen her in a day or so and when I went out to see her she was a mess, with feathers flying all over the place. So now she runs around saying "I'm NAKED!!!" in the morning before the sun warms everything up.

OMG - We just got chickens two months ago, and I did not know anything about this "molting"! Glad you are running the contest! We have 6 Chickens, a mix of breeds, about 4 - 5 eggs a day. We live in Col and it is still preety warm..none have lost feathers yet. What do you put on the floor of the chicken run during the winter? It is mostly harden soil with some rock now. And do chickens like snow? Do we need to worry about them freezing? What are other winter weather precautions I should take , and do they lay as many eggs in the winter? Thanks!

Amelia and Dotte are going through their first molt and were quite uncomfortable. This shot was taken not long before their worst day. They are happily getting feathers now.
