Entry #3 - Ceramics

I spent some time on a contract in the middle of the pacific. WHile there I was able to partake in many activities. I spent a lot of time bowling, drinking, painting fantasy & scifi miniatures, learned to sail, and got my PADI open water dive card. But my fondest memories were in the ceramics shop where as a complete novice I taught the instructor a thing or two.

On the island (Johnston Island) we had some old worn plaster molds for slip casting. One set in particular was for a classic set of chessmen. Detail was worn and the greenware needed to be re-sculpted for the most part to add back the fine detail.

Note the use of 'washes' and 'dry brushing', as well as 'outlining', 'stippling', and 'mottling' - surprised the heck outta that art instructor - She said it'd never turn out. I just wish that the board hadn't exploded in the kiln.

I don't have the 'work in progress' shots available at the moment, but here is what I do have (the original set is safely in a box in the basement). I really want to get a kiln.

Wow, small world! I was out on JI in the 90's contract work, testing the emissions on the BRA incinerator. I miss that island.

Sometimes I have extreme fun with soaps, this is Love Spell a very light and sweet fragrance, cant wait to cut it, has a pinkish/red swirling inside! Always a treat to cut them! I am not allowed to cut soap unless I ask my mother to come watch first! lol she helps me so much, yes a huge blessing to have her so close and so frequently in my life, lover to bits!

HarmonyAnn and I sat for five hours yesterday making some fun embeds out of soap to add to soaps for fun. She was a trooper, I dont have many molds so we had to keep alternating them. We molded about two lbs or so of soap! I used half of these and I have to make some coffee soap that I like to put the embeds that look like coffee beans on top.

Pics are not true to color, and its all glittery on the roses too. On to the next two loafs, gonna do a bunch. View attachment 1582335

That's called Pane Bianco (a fancy way of saying white bread ). I make it with bits of sun dried tomatoes, fresh basil, black olives, cheese and garlic. Tasty with pasta!

@007Sean I am reading your signature, and I wonder if I may ask which type of pheasant you like the best? I am down to just a goose at this point, it is a plan to create a small aviary for just a few pretty pheasants and quail.

LOL not all of them, sometimes the color morphs in the process, annoying and happens way to frequent. Thanks GRanny
