We started out with 8 RIR in 2010. Then last year my hubby went to Tractor Supply alone (big mistake!) and "surprised" me with 9 more. 3 Great Blacks one of which turned out to be a rooster we call Foghorn Leghorn, 3 blonds and 3 whites. This year we got 4 more RIR and 4 Buff Oringtons. Now over that same three years we lost 1 blond to a hawk we think. 1 great black hen got injured and then died and 2 of the original RIRs died this year, one from illness, the other I think it was just her time and one of the whites died too. The newest chicks are being moved out to the coop this weekend. We got them in February so it is time and the weather is finally cooperating. They are starting to get their combs and are fully feathered and pretty feisty and adventurous so this should be an interesting weekend.
So we have bought 8 + 9 + 8 = 25 and lost 5 so we have 20 right now. I think we have done pretty well for never having had birds of any kind before this.

8 ... for now.

We have started with six RIR from TS. Then we went and picked up an assortment seems like one of each lol. makes 15 then we felt that was to many so we decided to get rid of a couple. So I got a guy from work interested so he went home and built a chicken tractor. and is coming to pick up 2 of the RIR's on sat. and now I cant tell him "NO" this late in the game . So I have been sitting outside after work with my wife and chickens. Trying to figure out what 2 chickens to give him. Honestly I don't want to give any away. OH well I could never go back on my word.
I have some Americana / ? & Americana / silkie chicks up for grabs if you want give him them and keep your rir. Some of them might be roosters. I also am looking to give away The Americana roo and black silkie roo there 1 yr. old. We hatcher 12, I was looking for only 6, so 6 can go. I'm in the Middletown area. The kids have the chicks they want picked out. They hatched on Easter. The photo is from 2 weeks ago. I have a silkie hen sitting on 4 more eggs, they might need a home as well. Let me know. Free to good home

I have 5 Loham browns, 2 cats, 2 rabbits, 2 fish, 1 toddler and I am picking up a cream crest legbar, and a lavender pekin, they are 3 weeks old, can't wait lol

I have five. My suburban yard wouldn't support very many more. I am surprised to see how many folks have nine to fifteen. Do that many chickens require an acre or more for free ranging?

I have 14:

1 Buff Orpington (Lucy)
1 Dark Brahma (Sweetie)
1 Cinnamon Queen (Foxy Cleopatra)
2 Easter Eggers (Waffles and Eggalina)
1 Bantam Mix (Sadie)
1 Mystery Chicken (Nugget)
3 Black Copper Marans (Buttercup - suspected roo, Clover and Daisy)
2 Ameraucana (Willow and Sophie)
1 Silver Laced Wyandotte (Peaches)
1 Barred Rock (Allie)

I only wanted 4 or 5 and ended up with 7 last year and this year I got 7 more - they are sooooo addicting!

Wish I could let them free range but not with all the critters around (ferral cats, skunks, fox, racoons, bear etc) but they have a huge run and a tajmahal coop.

7 RIR
2 mixes
2 black wyandottes
2 australorpps
1 partrige cochin
17 silkies
8 easter egger
2 buff orpingtons
1 buff rcck
2 barred rock
3 white crested black polish
1 crevecore
1 russian orloff
2 silver sebrights
2 old english games
2 d'uccles
2 knaki campbell ducks
