We started out with 8 RIR in 2010. Then last year my hubby went to Tractor Supply alone (big mistake!) and "surprised" me with 9 more. 3 Great Blacks one of which turned out to be a rooster we call Foghorn Leghorn, 3 blonds and 3 whites. This year we got 4 more RIR and 4 Buff Oringtons. Now over that same three years we lost 1 blond to a hawk we think. 1 great black hen got injured and then died and 2 of the original RIRs died this year, one from illness, the other I think it was just her time and one of the whites died too. The newest chicks are being moved out to the coop this weekend. We got them in February so it is time and the weather is finally cooperating. They are starting to get their combs and are fully feathered and pretty feisty and adventurous so this should be an interesting weekend.
So we have bought 8 + 9 + 8 = 25 and lost 5 so we have 20 right now. I think we have done pretty well for never having had birds of any kind before this.
