Oh Craigslist, You Amuse Me So!

I was thinking that, too. Maybe one of those crowing hens folks tell newbies about so they get their hopes up that their crowing 4 month old bird is a hen.

I don't think the crowing hens are good layers. I would think that the hormones responsible for the crowing would supress egg laying.

I had a Serama hen that crowed. I only found out that she did when I had her in the house raising a batch of chicks that she had hatched. Startled the daylights out of me the first time I heard her do it! I never heard her crow when she was with the rooster; it seemed it was only when she was without the bigmouth roo that she felt the need to "mark her territory" by crowing.

I'm thinking this might be what's going on with the craigslist hen, too. Sometimes the dominant hen crows, particularly in a flock without a rooster. I doubt the neighbors would accept "it's a hen - she the egg she just laid?" as a reason to keep it, since the noise is the reason for the ban on roosters in the first place. Anybody who'd be hoping to get fertile eggs if they get this "rooster" is going to be disappointed.

2 Silkey Roosters for Free (Medford OR)

We have 2 beautiful Silky brother roosters that we have to get rid of. Too many roosters in our flock. Please give them a good home. They are really pretty and nice. Too small for a chicken dinner.

Part of me wants to call them and tell them those aren't silkies..........
