Yep Toni,
That's my plan too, cull cull cull... Just keep the very best of the best. That's the main reason I've been trying to hatch every single egg I get, just to be sure I have enough to pick out some really nice ones to continue with next year. I think you're about spot on with the leg deal too. Those that want some will just have to realize they will get it that way and have to do just like everyone else that is fortunate enough to have them, and that's work with them.

Plan on using a lot of the slim bodied ones on the phoenix bantams too. I really am liking the way those I got from you looked. So want to do that to some more of mine. Should have a lot of ways to go with it all next year I'm hoping...
Will post some pics of my good babies once they get grown.

Chuck, same here too now. You helped me with several birds, so if I get any good barreds or creles type stuff out of this that you may need, you are welcome to some, just say the word. They wont be going anywhere else, so I'll be sure to let you know what I end up with this fall.

Thanks Aubrey! Just let me know when you get anything. I have been working as much as I can on the Crele so that will help out allot. If there is anything you need from me let me know and that is same with you also Toni.

So little update on the chicks! They are doing well and the mother is so protective over them! The white is starting to get some black spots, so I can't wait to see what he/she turns out to be color wise! At what ages do you guys start culling at?

That's good! As for culling its always best to let them grow up to see if they get a good tail and saddles and to see there type. I like to hold on to them for around 2 years to see how long there tails do get. Some Ohiki don't show much in the tail till around 2 years. If they are not showing much in type I do like to try and cull them in a year. Doing it like this helps to keep from culling something you can use.

That's right, most all long tails you dont need to jump the gun on with feather culling, they can take a while, best to wait at least til after their first adult molt. I would have screwed myself over several times If I had done that. I've had some in various breeds that at the first fall you'd swear they were junk, then the following year end up being some of your best birds.
Got a bantam white phoenix right now like that. On his first year, he had a nice thick feathering going on (which is why I kept him)
But had a really high angle to it which I hated and hadnt gotten much leght. Looked like a darn leghorn. He's coming 3 now though and has yet to molt since he came into his adult plumage.
He's been in a breeding pen the entire time, but still has 4 foot on him, and 20 inch saddles even with the girls doing their best to step on them all day. He's still in blood feather too as of last weekend when I dusted him.

Seems to me the slow ones often do end up being either your better birds or just junk no real in between.

Especially with you just having a few Ian, I'd keep them all for now. Pick the ones whos traits will complement it's mates type and continue from their with them.

Chuck,
will be glad to do that for you if I have anything in the end that will help you with that. Will stay in touch on them and hopfully do some swapping. Might even try to meet up with you if we can time it all right, would like to see you in person at least once. Might have to pile up at Toni's one day ...haha

Toni,

those darn turtles are still coming out and nesting, been covered up with them for over a month straight now !! Dont think I've ever had this many in one year in the yard.... We went to town last Saturday before our little Tropical storm hit. When we came back there was a monster of one in the front yard. Aimee saw it first and said my God what's that...haha she had to be 18 inches long if not a bit better, seen some big mud sliders before but never one quite that big.

Ya Aubrey that would be nice. The only one (Ohiki breeder) that I have met in person is Toni. I always like going down to see Toni and it would be nice to finally get to met you also. Wish we all lived closer to each other.

How are everyone's birds doing!? My first two chicks are getting big and are living in a group with their mother. I had some more born last weekend, We have a millie another White/fibro Project and a few others.

So far so good. I got allot of Barred chicks. Some has the non-moulting gene in them. Got some hens on eggs now some is for Barred and the others is for Crele. Got some Ginger hens on eggs and some Black hens on eggs.

Here is a picture of one of my Barred ones.

I ordered some ohiki x hackle fly tying eggs from onagadori back in Feb- the only 2 that hatched were these
that I thought were the crosses.... Can anyone tell me if they are the straight Ohikis????

the hen -

cockerel -

at least they are a pair! They dont seem to show any of the grizzle Amanda mentioned in her ad.

They are hanging out with my Genetic project birds & they are the smallest birdsI have since I have not had
much interest in the bantams....

I just took these pics & they are 4 mo old, anybody tell me if they look pure or are they the X'ss??
