OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Wow! Can't believe how much I've missed since we've been on vacation the last couple of weeks....You all have been quite busy adding to the poultry world!
I spent the two weeks prior to our departure trying to re-home all the excess cockerels I ended up with from my 21 chick order in March (10-11 were boys...). I kind of hated to sell/trade them but too many boys throwing their weight around at the ripe old age of 12 weeks! I did keep one (with one EE still unknown if boy or girl) I think he's a Blue Copper Marans but he's kind of splash blue--he is turning out gorgeous though, but still crows like he's hacking up a hairball.
Looking forward to seeing if this swap gathering can work out--might be best if it doesn't though, willpower may weaken upon arrival.

"mlaff," did your Cream Legbar girls ever arrive? If you really were only planning on keeping 3-4 and had 7 coming I'd be really interested in buying the remaining three. It looks like you might be doing a swap for some others, so totally understand if not an option. I'm just really interested in adding 2-3 CL pullets to my flock, but no more boys:)

"loveourbirds,' cannot imagine how in the world you are able to keep track of 600+ birds...I can't even keep count of my 23 lf girls, plus four bantams...well, the bantams are easier--they have their own coop/run and I can count to four easily...the larger group is constantly moving...kind of like herding cats. Would love to see your place someday--admire your ability and appreciate your knowledge!

"baseballchick," So sorry to hear of your flock loss--that's awful! Did any of the missing birds ever show up? I've lost a BCM hen to what I believe was a Red Tailed Hawk--nothing but some feathers left, like an aerial hit, although she was a good sized bird. No other explanation though--close to the house, middle of the day, we have two dogs and lots of activity--coyotes, raccoons and foxes around but not 20 feet from the house (between house and coop)...have had close calls by both Red Tailed and Coopers Hawks, but girls all screamed a warning and ran for cover--always when loose on the yard. Anyways, sorry you lost any....and I like your call tag--baseball for you or a family member?

OK, enough rambling...oh yeah, one more thing..."Cluckitall," your Rhodebars are beautiful! Didn't you have the incubator with Silkie and EE eggs at Champion Feed earlier this summer? That was a great idea! I went back near hatch day and of course they had only just begun...I only have one beautiful Silkie left, living with three MF D'Uccle hens, probably just as well I didn't see any more Silkies or the temptation may have been too great to resist!
Now, back to unpacking and laundry...and maybe go mess with the birds for a while:)

im not going to be around much in the next few days, my brother needs me to repaint 3 of his trucks. if anyone needs something feel free to use PM, it might be 11 at night but i'll get you an answer. have a great weekend!

Hi DelcoChix! Nice to meet you! Hope you had a wonderful vacation!

The "missing" chickens never showed, I even stayed awake one morning from 3:30 am on to listen for my rooster ... Nothing :( the only good that came out if it is my hubby giving the ok on building a new coop and run! LOL

the baseball is for a couple reasons, my dad has been coaching for 40+ years. All levels from tball up to major league try out camps. It's what I grew up with, and I have a deep love for the game. My son is 12 and plays baseball and loves it! He works hard and does well and always wants to learn more. He sets goals and works hard to accomplish them, and makes me very proud. I love the game and always will. We live on 17+ acres now, and one if my dreams is to build a ball field on our property. It will be named after my dad, of course ;)

welcome back delcochix- hope it was a wonderful vacation.
Thanks--vacation was fantastic--Paris for the first time and then London been there before) for a week+ exploring while staying with family. Kids are old enough to be able to enjoy traveling all over (15 and 19), and they have the travel bug pretty hard!
Hardest thing (besides the obvious...$$$ and weak American dollar) is the prep prior to leaving town with the 27 birds, three horses, a pony, two dogs, four cats...and a few of them being senior citizens so setting up everything with vets prior to leaving, "just in case" something bad happens. Coming home to everyone safe and sound=a good thing! Lost a big tree from wind, basement flooded a bit with sump malfunction, yard ready to be baled and garden has exploded along with the weeds...but well worth the escape!

Now it's laundry, stall and coop cleaning and cutting up a 60' tree that thankfully fell in the neighbors beanfield, not our roof! Beans should recover fine...roof wouldn't have fared so well.

Vacation was a great escape..see above:)

The baseball background explains the callname! Just wondered--my 19 year old son has been in baseball (basketball, football...sigh) for years, T-ball through high school and is now playing Division II ball at college so we've spent many a day on the bleachers learning (still learning!) about the game--hate to hear folks comment on how 'boring' it is...really is more of a thinking mans sport. Sounds great to have your very own "Field of Dreams!" Build it and they will come....

Sorry no better news about the missing chickens---always hoping! But, sounds like a silver lining with a new coop in your future...just build it bigger than you think you need...we just expanded our big coop before vacation--had the Amish build a 12x16 shed with loft in the back half, figured 6'x12' for actual coop, front of shed would store yard equipment instead of garage (maybe get a car in?) What a doofus I am. Chickens and accessories quite dusty so silly to store other stuff in there...now coop area is "L" shaped, with one 10' perch and short side still has 6' perch..plenty of room for the 11 new birds I've added to the 12 older girls. Leaves enough room for temp.meat bird set-up for my daughters 4-H broiler project--just need it for about 5 weeks.
Good luck with new plans--very fun!

A few had said they wanted time for hatching if we did the swap. How about we plan on Sept 7th or 8th? Is a Saturday or Sunday. Which ever day works best for us. Don't have anything going on in August either.

are they large fowl or bantam? i have some bantams (could use more) but ive been searching hard for large fowl. also are they both hens?

Large fowl, big and fluffy, show lines directly from Dick Horstman. Decent layers too. Both hens. Believe me, if we still had our Roo, we'd have some beautiful babies right now.
