OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Yesterday, I noticed that one of my Welsummer hen's foot looked a little swollen so I soaked her in an epson salts bath (which they all seem to like and always feel refrehed and healthier afterwards). I did it mainly to clean her feet up. I noticed a round spot of dark dirt on the bottom of her pad that didn't come off. Last night, I looked in my chicken book for foot sores and injuries and found out that she has bumblefoot which I had never heard of. The spot of dirt was actually the scab. I researched on this sight and found directions to remove and wrap it. There is hard stuff under the scab that also has to come out. I did the "surgery" today in the kitchen as per directions and I think all went well. I'll check it tomorrow. Another day in poultryville!

Well done! I've read about bumblefoot but it sort of grossed me out...just hope I don't ever have to do what you did!

for future reference: ive seen skulls exposed on chickens, as long as you keep them clean and away from flies they will heal to the point of "you cant tell" in a month.  if the spot is no larger than a quarter on large fowl, or a dime on bantams - just rub some Neosporin on it and separate them - I usually bring them in a house to help keep flies off of them.  if you can keep it out of their eyes bluecoat works well too, I have hand painted it on but that can be a process.

Hopefully I will never need to put this into practice, but that is comforting, thank you! Having horses, we always have blukote handy. Sadly for this little roo, the injury was from the top of his head all the way down to his upper back and could tell in his eyes he was in too much pain. Hopefully these types of injuries aren't extremely common..? Egads!

So sorry that happened to you. Thank goodness for Dads tho.

I know lots of people like their EEs but we had to get rid of our because they were just so agressive. Even killed one of our Buff Orp girls that was much bigger and one of my blue Marans. Hubs and I have agreed we'll never have them again.

Have you pulled your other roo out of there?

Yikes! I thought it was an isolated incident and I just happened to have an oddly aggressive EE. This one, if she sticks around..will be my last, as well. So sorry about your birds! I did get the other roo out to safety. While I was yanking the injured one out, I yanked the other, black, out simultaneously. Oddly enough, no one, devil EE included, bothered him a bit.

Thanks everyone else for your kind words. <3

Mstarr, Way to go! I'd never have the stomach for the job!

Yep! Another hot day in OHIO

Found our FIRST eggs this morning, what a thrill! Two were on the coop floor and one was in the run. I just put ping-pong balls in the nesting boxes so hopefully they will figure out to lay eggs in the boxes. My neighbor is going to give me a few plastic easter eggs to use instead (more realistic). Any other suggestions to get them to lay in the boxes would be appreciated. We Are so PROUD of our girls!!!!!!

the plastic eggs and ping pong balls should work, as they get used to laying they will migrate toward the boxes for the most part.

Ugh I'm so upset with myself right now. Yesterday I noticed that one of my pens was a bit too crowded and my two silkie roos were getting stepped on, so I moved them to another pen with my BR, EE, sebrights and OEGB hen. I was concerned because the EE can be a bully sometimes but they seemed to get along just peachy. I went out this morning and they were great, too. I just went out a few minutes ago to make sure they made it through the heat ok and my favorite one, the blue silkie roo with SUCH a sweet personality, had the skin ripped right off the back of his head. My poor baby, it kills me to think he could have been suffering for hours. The worst part is just knowing in my gut the EE had something to do with it and I caused it. Thankfully my dad was here visiting and was raised on a meat chicken farm so he ended his suffering for me, lord knows I couldn't have done it myself.
Tried to upload a pic of the cutie but it won't post for some reason..hm.

So sorry!
We had the same thing happen to us last week!
When we got our first Brahmas from TSC back in April a few of them ended up being Sebrights. They were labeled dark brahmas and they were all the same size
Fast forward to last week ...... we ended up with 3 Seabright roosters and two pullets. The one roo killed one roo and injured the other. We were able to save him . The really mean roo is gone also. hubby took care of that! Now the three Seabright that are left are starting to pick on my beautiful10 week old laced brahmas. This started yesterday. All of my birds free range but I keep the younger ones in a big fenced in area. now the sea brights are getting in the pen picking on my brahmas! They are out of here!
