OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Lol, Outpost, if or rather when we have acreage, we'll be going crazy too. Other thing to remember about the chicken math is that your hens will molt at around 15 months old and most will stop or at least slow down laying during this period (anywhere from a few weeks to a few months), that's the practical reason to get more chicks each spring. This is something we didn't know when we first ordered. So if your limit is 6 you could go with 3 the first year and 3 the second or 4 and 2. The unused garage sounds like a good option if it is easy to cut holes for doors. If it's a small wood sided one car that you can play off as a garden shed, it shouldn't be a problem, but you'll want to check with zoning. The folks down the street from us used their garage for their parrots so...

No worries. I'm sure you will have better self control than me

Self control? Chickens? No, no, no.

Chicken math will take over. It will consume your life and next thing you know you'll have a dozen chickens and 4 or 5 ducks and a couple guineas and a turkey or two. Then your ruined cause you'll want to hatch chicks out of them and then your numbers will quadruple.

Yep, you're screwed.

Chicken math.....I was going to mention that being that you are new,,, but I didn't want to scare you away....LOL!  We started out 2 years ago with 6 laying hens.  New Hampshire, Rhode Island Red, and Red Sex Link.  Wanted a rooster, but when we went to pick him up from the farmer, she said we HAD to take both or none.  So, 6 hens, 2 roosters.  Got an incubator.  Who doesn't love baby fluffy butt chicks???  Once, twice hatching out babies.  Then had a rescue mission and got 30+ chickens out of that deal.  Some time in 2013 we had 98 chickens.  We have 3 acres, but housing for them was just build as we go.  :th   We are down to a respectable 58 now.  Still have about 10 roosters that need sent to freezer camp.  Also getting a couple different breeds and next month I will fire up the incubator AGAIN!:D

Good luck with your 3.  They are more addictive than you could every imagine.;)

We started 4 yrs ago with 6 chicks & 2 ducks. Before the end of the first summer we had over 75 birds...IN town. We have ranged anywhere between 50-400 birds (counting babies) at diferent points in time since then. We have since moved to the country (& refuse to return to town) & have had chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, quail, guineas, peafowl & goats. We are currently at our lowest headcount since that first summer. I'm down to 8 adult turkeys, 2 geese, 2 peafowl & about 20 chickens...plus 25 peeps & 19 poults in the brooder. I am getting out of waterfowl for a while & focusing on the chickens, turkeys & peafowl. And we will be getting goats again come spring once we get moved & new shelters built.

my sportsman incubator is going to be here on Monday! Here's to not having to throw away hatching eggs ever again because I don't have enough room to set them!

Hey, Fellow Buckeyes!!!!! Hey, Hi & Hello!!! I am from just outside of Lima, OH. Presently, transplanted in Arkansas. I'm fairly new on BYC but not new to chickens. Hubby and I have hatched, tamed & sold many chickens. Our last group was a mix of RIR's, Barred Rocks, Marans, Orpingtons, Silkies, Bantams & Polish. We have 6 acres, mostly Oaks & Cedars & if I have it my way....the makings of a small barnyard, would make me happy! We are talking about getting chickens, again, & I've been talking about a few goats. I am studying up on those for now! Glad to know there are some Buckeyes on here, makes it feel more like home! YAY!!!
