Other thing to remember about the chicken math is that your hens will molt at around 15 months old and most will stop or at least slow down laying during this period (anywhere from a few weeks to a few months), that's the practical reason to get more chicks each spring. This is something we didn't know when we first ordered. So if your limit is 6 you could go with 3 the first year and 3 the second or 4 and 2. The unused garage sounds like a good option if it is easy to cut holes for doors. If it's a small wood sided one car that you can play off as a garden shed, it shouldn't be a problem, but you'll want to check with zoning. We are down to a respectable 58 now. Still have about 10 roosters that need sent to freezer camp. Also getting a couple different breeds and next month I will fire up the incubator AGAIN!
