Hello from Greenville! I'm excited to see so many other Ohio people! I just started my coop about a month ago. I'm waiting for my chicks to grow up and then I'll be supplying my family and our extended family with eggs. I already have egg orders and my chicks are only 1 month old! LOL
I am looking to start my daughters in 4H for chickens, but I have no idea where to start. Anyone got any tips? Do I have to have a full-blooded papered chicken for that? Is there such a thing as a papered chicken? Where would I begin to find one locally?
Hi neighbor! I am just west of Greenville on 571.
For 4H you just need to decide what breed you want and get nice quality stock. A friend and I are partners with chickens and we have many really rare breeds. My favorite is the Cream Legbar-it is autosexing, which means you can tell which sex it is at hatch (sex-linked chicks are also sexable at hatch, but they are a cross of two breeds and it only works for the first generation), and it holds true for every generation. They also lay blue eggs and are the friendliest chickens!
A few more really popular breeds are Cochins, Orpingtons, and Silkies. I don't have Cochins, and my Silkies aren't laying yet, but we do have Chocolate Orpingtons. Just search for different chicken breeds to see what you and your daughters like. I can help you find eggs and hatch them for you, if you'd like, once you decide what you want.
On the last weekend of this month, Troy has a large animal/poultry swap at the fairgrounds. We will be there, along with many others selling birds. You do need to be careful and watch for sickness, and keep any new birds separated from your babies for 30-60 days to be sure they aren't sick and pass it to yours.
P.S. Chickens are not papered.
